Putnam West coach Carlos Adamson had every reason to be nervous late Friday night.

The fifth-ranked Patriots were locked in a tight game with No. 2 Choctaw, and it was coming down to free throws.

But this time he was relaxed.

It would be free throws that propelled Putnam West to a 60-58 upset of the Yellowjackets to clinch the Big 10 Conference title.

“We’ve lost a few games where free throws were the deciding factor,” Adamson said. “So, our practices now consist of a lot of free throws. But it’s always good to see girls step up to the line in pressure situations and knock them down.”

Putnam West made 11 of 15 from the line in the fourth — including six in the final 2:19 from junior Ce’Nara Skanes and sophomore Mekayla Furman.

“We run for every one we miss,” Furman said. “It was good that we actually got to the line.”

The combination of Skanes and Furman proved troublesome for Choctaw. They attacked the basket constantly, which resulted in a combined 44 points. Skanes led with 23 and nine rebounds. Furman followed with 21 points and three assists.

The duo scored all 16 of Putnam West’s fourth-quarter points.

That erased a strong second-half performance from Oklahoma signee Ana Llanusa, who finished with 21 points, five rebounds and five assists. She scored 13 points in the second half, pulling Choctaw ahead with a 3-pointer in the fourth after trailing by nine.
