Is that just the creepiest, disgusting thing imaginable? I mean what type of people could walk in on a 60 year old man in the shower abusing a 10 year old boy, tell the head coach, who supposedly tells the AD and they all sweep it under the rug?

I've lost all respect for Paterno. Seriously. He should be gone immediately and charged with a crime.

Anyone that knew of the allegations and never mentioned should be tried and jailed, if found guilty. Administration/regents are almost as guilty as coach!

Agreed. And the kids in question should sue Paterno, Penn St. et al. for every penny they have. Surely there is no statute of limitations pertaining to egregious child abuse.

If it's truly not against the law for an adult not to report sexual abuse of a child they need to get it on the books ASAP. Name it the Paterno law. The worst thing about this is that Penn St conducted an investigation in 1999 about similar accusations and kept that quiet too. This makes the 2002 silence completely unforgivable.

The fact they instituted a law for Sandusky that he couldn't bring kids to campus is proof enough. Everyone of them should be fired immediately.

It is a horrible crime and cover up by the university. I think there will be more things coming out soon.

Did they really? Yikes. I know there are chains of command for harassment stuff to make sure the right legal action is taken, but this is a little different. If you see something like this, why do you just tell a supervisor? Shouldn't the police be the first stop?

I think there actually IS a statute of limitations on these types of cases. Don't know where I heard that, but I think this has played out before in some of those Catholic altar boy troubles from 10-15 years ago.

But this case is as shocking as it is horrific. I'm completely stunned.

Shows you what despicable things people will do to protect their sacred cow.

I couldn't live with myself if I had turned a blind eye and didn't do everything I could, then, not fifteen to twenty years later, to stop the abuse. Everyone in a position of authority at Penn State should be fired, including Paterno.

It's sad to see a storied career end in shame. But if the only thing Joe Pa did was pass the buck to the AD when he heard what that scum bag was doing to those kids, he doesn't deserve to go out with his head held high.

I think this just shows his flat out selfishness! To continue to coach into your mid 80's just so you can break a record and hopefully put it out of reach for anyone else to break is pure selfishness. It makes sense for all the turning a blind eye to all the problems now. I think his true colors are being shown for the world to see!

The more I hear of this story, the more disturbing that it becomes. This was a guy who was extremely critical of Barry Switzer as being a bad person and a "cheat" and held himself out as a paragon of "everything that is right in sports". Shame on me for actually buying in to it, and shame on him for not risking his reputation by doing the right thing at the time and shielding a serial rapist.

In fairness to the regents (Trustees at Penn State), I have read most of the articles and the entire grand jury report and there is nothing to suggest they were ever informed. The President of the University clearly knew and he claims he was told Sandusky was hoarsing around with a boy in the shower and that Sandusky was banned from bringing children on campus.

My problem with that is it appears to be a lie. Prior to be President he was in sociology and family counseling. Who doesn't ask what hoarsing around with a boy in the shower means and why the punishment is not to bring children to campus? Sandusky was running a huge charity (similar to big brothers) and constantly bringing kids to Penn State events. I flatly do not believe this man and if it is true he was grossly negligent.

Paterno has announced his retirement at the end of the season. The President of the University needs to go and he needs to not be employed in another high paying position. I think garbage collecting or fast food service is about all he has the proper judgment to handle.

tycat, I don't disagree with anything you said. My remarks were meant to call attention to what Paterno has accomplished at Penn State, not the selfishness he displayed in hoping the sex scandal would go away or in refusing to retire. His decision to continue as the head coach, long past a time when he should have been home with his family, was indeed a selfish act!

If I was a trustee Paterno's retirement "statement" would be the last straw. He is basically ordering the Trustees to "not spend another minute on his status".

The guy is dictating his own terms on how he is going to handle this. The trustees should accept his resignation and suspend him for the rest of the season effectively immediately while the special panel investigates.

I did not interpret it this way when I first read it, but I actually think you are correct. He is attempting to tell them how to handle the situation. Honestly, I am not and never have been a fan of Paterno.

Sorry, Ada, wasn't disagreeing with your remarks just adding my two cents to those remarks.

He should have retired 15-20 years ago. He also probably would not have been remembered as he now will be, especially for the rest of his life!

Totally agree. If they fired him today, they wouldn't have to spend another minute on his 'status' either!

Anyone else think Paterno will be dead within a year? Seems like old folks often go very soon after the things they love the most, whether its a spouse, a friend, or a pet. Pretty clearly JoePa cared about the Penn St. head coach job more than anything else in his life, and that's all been taken away from him..

For once I agree with boca.

Paterno's had more than enough time to dictate the terms of his retirement. Given what he's done at Penn State, that's a right he deserved. But not now. If he wanted an opportunity to go out gracefully, he should've done that by now. He knew these accusations were out there, and he probably knew about the current investigation. If he wanted a chance to retire without controversy, he should've done it.

(And really, he should've retired after 2009. They won 11 games, including a bowl win over LSU, and finished in the top 10. That was his best chance of going out a winner)
