Polla transferring

He is a great kid. The coaches love him. At this level the game is a bit fast for him. He will help a smaller program.
He knew his time was up when we got the late signee.

Can't believe he is transferring because people kept saying he was improving and ready to play. Maybe the Thunder will pick him up after college.

This can’t be good news for you. Do we need to put you on suicide watch? ;)

I feel like we didn't put him in a great position to succeed. I feel like we could've coaxed more out of him. Case in point: the Texas game last year in Austin. We cannot keep our man in front of us on the perimeter in the least. Why not go zone and force a really poor shooting team to beat us from deep? Polla could've anchored the middle and offset our rebounding troubles.

But no, we man-to-manned the whole way with no adjustments and gave up a truckload of lay-ups.

Sometimes giving away five fouls isn't the end of the world.

I wish him well.

He is a relic of a previous era, where he could have been a decent player. Big plodding centers have to be absurdly skilled (like 20 and 10 level guys) to be playable in the modern game.

I'm going to wish him good luck. I know the coaches and players all like him. He was a good teammate.

Matt Painter disagrees... who has been deploying traditional lineups with great success for many years now at Purdue.

Isaac Haas was 7'2'' 290 and he had a great career at Purdue... and now that has passed to 7'3'' Matt Harms who had a great sophomore year and is poised for a great junior and senior season. Neither guy is very athletic.

Haas has no chance at pro basketball, but was a very good college player. With very traditional lineups Purdue has gone 130-69 and finished 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, and 1st in the Big 10 standings... all with lineups you guys would call antiquated.

Those teams would have been significantly better if they weren't tossing the ball inside to those stiffs. This is the trap of results oriented thinking.

But they weren't tossing the ball inside to those stiffs. Most of their offensive output comes from pick'n'rolls or offensive rebounds. If they can pin their man and catch it 3 feet from the bucket they will get the ball but its not like they base their offense around throwing it to the low post every possession.

They do it a lot less with the kid this year, but they ran a lot of plays for the big kid last year. I will say that being that enormous at least allows you to alter shots at the rim. A 6'10" guy like Polla doesn't even offer much in that regard.

Looks like he wound up at UT-Martin. Don't know if he will have to sit this year or if he tried to get a waiver.

Took a little longer than expected. UT Martin was the pick. Not sure the connection. Likely Kruger helped him a ton for the right placement

So to recap, we had three scholarship players the last two seasons who are now playing at UT-Martin, Santa Barbara and ORU...they were nowhere near Big 12 caliber talents.

I can see why we had trouble. Actually, it's amazing we accomplished what we did.

Remind me who these other 2 guys were. ORU doesn't have their 19-20 roster published yet.

I guess you could say Freeman was a bust but Lazenby was always depth, a guy that wanted to compete but knew he was down the bench.

Freeman & Lazenby

I was one of a number of posters here who didn’t expect much out of Polla and Lazenby. That was not the case with Freeman, at least for me. His performance in an all-star game in California not long before he committed to OU had me convinced he could be really good. I wasn’t the only one. Rivals basketball guru, Eric Bossi, said Matt would have been a four star recruit if he had attended high school in the U.S. He just never reached his projected potential at OU.

Guess you could also add Jamuni McNeace to that list. Some of us thought he would be a star before he was through. But, when an injury his senior season got in his head he never recovered from it.
