They did some jersey switching today. The 3 freshman guards were on the squad with Osby,Fitz, and M'Baye. They started with Cousins at the point. Hornbeak was at the #2 and Heild at the #3. Osby and M'Baye were the bigs. Hornbeak got some work at the point. But, it was mostly Cousins. He did an Ok job with the ball and getting the offense started. I don't remember him scoring in the scrimmage.
The bigs rotated in and with regularity. Heild did a really fine job on defense. He got a couple of steals and several deflections. Well, there was that one time when Grooms faked him smooth out of his jock and got to rim and scored. Horneak defended pretty good and kind of broke the ice when he hit a nice 3. Heild scored some. It looks to me that he is an OK 3 pt shooter. But, gets pretty good off the dribble inside the 3 pt. line.
Pledger and Fitz probably had the best shooting days. I don't recall Grooms hitting a jump shot. But, he did get into the lane several times to contribute some offense. Osby made a couple of big time post moves but was off and on with his shot. M'Baye continues to be a huge defensive presence. But, he isn't hitting his shot much at all. There isn't anything different. His stroke looks good. The results just aren't there. Cam hit some. But, he was pretty quite compared to the last couple of days.
Tyler had his best day so far. He hit a couple of 3's and was pretty srcappy around the basket. Bennet had a good day too. He blocked several and got the rebounds he had a chance at. Arent didn't do anything bad. He just didn't do anything to draw attention. Same with Spangler.
Another guy that had his best day was Cole. He is rough around the edges and is not at all fluid in his movements. He has surprising range and did a good job down low all day. I'm pretty sure he scored more today than Bennet, Arent, and Spangler combined, and was just as good in everything else.
One interesting point is film day. That was today. At 2:00 Kruger takes the team upstairs for 30 min. to go over film. Last season Jarod, James, and M'Baye were left on the floor to drill on individual skills. Last seson coach Hill stayed with them. Today it was Henson. This years group is Jarod, James, Spangler, Steve N., and Cole. Spangler appears to be better from 8' in than he has shown so far. Cole, while I wouldn't want him in the rotation this year, certainly has some skills.
By default again today, Fitz wins the best player in gym award. He had an all around good practice. Heild gets the freshman of the day award. He was just better than the others today.
The players were getting alittle chippy toward the end. And the coaches were chirpy. I think everyone is getting tired and the day off tomorrow will probably be welcome by all.
