Brett, there was a nice article on the Mead kid in the Tulsa World today. Just a few questions for you as I know you are familiar with him:

First, is he a D-1 level basketball player;
Second and if so, will OU offer him in basketball (the article said they had in football);
Third, what are our chances of getting the kid.

Thanks.

I dont think he is a great bball player, I think he is a better football player than bball player. I dont think OU will offer in bball anytime soon, I'll think they will slow play it. But I could be wrong.

Alright where to start.

Athletically, yes he is a D1 guard. He is 6'7 and moves well enough to play the 3.

Skill wise, he hasn't caught up there. He is shooting the ball better this year, 40% from the 3 point line, however his ball handling and shooting off the move still have a long way to go.

I can tell you that one OU assistant was calling last year asking why he wasn't playing on the varsity, haha. However, I don't think he is a guy they are looking at because of the skill issue.

Jeff and I had a long talk yesterday about working harder at whatever he is doing. He is a great student, 4 AP classes right now. He has never been in trouble or even sent to the office at school. He just needs to work harder at the sport he is in. What hurts him in basketball is he only is on the court for 4 months of the year and with basketball being the highest skill required of the 3 sports, that really hurts him.

He has the ability to play basketball in college and was built for it. When we get his highlights together from basketball like they did in football I think offers will come in. Will they be at the level of the football ones is the question.

I can tell you he has told other kids he wants to play basketball in college. He said so after he got the offer from Clemson while at a basketball game. He also wasn't at football this summer for an entire month as he was traveling with his AAU team. He is a level headed kid and will make the decision that is best for him. He has a lot of support with from his mom, step dad and dad. They are a great family.

If you made me guess right now, I would tell you I don't really know because Jeff doesn't know. As he stated in the article, it will come down to what he feels is the best option.

I know that didn't help, but I don't want to put anything out there that Jeff hasn't put out there himself.

One thing I forgot. A school like Stanford could make it very hard for him to choose. He is big on school and has stated several times he would like to go to a school with ivy league type of education.

This is why it is hard to tell right now.

My personal opinion. I think he will be wearing a helmet in Norman in a year. Just a guess though.

That kid sounds impressive. Reminds me of Sam Bradford a bit in that he seems to excell at everything.

Sounds like a great kid. Sounds like he will have great options.

The OU coaches love the guard at Owasso who I believe is a junior but could be a soph.

I caught Mead for the first time tonight since early January and it was probably his best game of the year.

Hit 5 threes, a few nice dunks, got his midrange going as well, dropped 27 points in an OT win.

Kid is athletic enough to be a high major 3, and he keeps shooting like he did that would only help matters. (His handles will have to improve a ton).

Mead could be in line for a big playoff run if he keeps this up. Was super impressed tonight.

He has had 4 or 5 games like that this year. He has shot over 40% on threes this year.

His ball handling skills do leave you wanting for sure.

Tonight was a good game but he has done the same to BA, Lawton Ike and others.

Stillwater has a great point guard that came from Lawton last year. Thompson is the real deal and in my opinion is being missed on liked sedrick Johnson last year.

Tulsa and ORU are going to miss out two years in a row on an Oklahoma stud if they don't try to get him.

Sam,
Is he a Cam Clark type 3? Better range, not as good a ball handler? I assume he is more of a 3 star probably but how does he compare?

OU had a roster right now with Tyler Neal and Casey Arent. I think he could be better than those two.

As far as Thompson, people are sleeping on him bigtime. It will be sad if he signs with south dakota when tulsa can use him.

Sounds like he handles the ball exactly like Cam Clark.

I'm going to assume that as the same stage as Clark, he shoots the three much better. I remember Clark being money from midrange in high school, but not so much being a three point threat. Clark was more probably polished at the same stage, because as Romar mentioned playing football and baseball has slowed some of the skill development of Mead. I want to say Clark was able to get by some high schoolers in 1 v 1 scenarios and I don't think Mead can break people down off the dribble right now.

As a basketball guy in Oklahoma, the junior class is kind of a frustrating one. Two of the most talented players in it are Mead and Steven Parker. Based on how they're both playing now, I'd say despite both having other primary sports they're both Mid-Major types. Which can only make me wonder how good they would be if they were 100% basketball like say Omega Harris.

Here's a video of Mead from Spring/Summer ball last year. His game has developed quite a bit from then.
