Question for the board: Are refs allowing TY now to get fouled.....

More?? I have noticed that hand checking and bumping him literally everywhere he goes used to get called as a foul. Now they turn their heads. And then yesterday I listened to the radio wrap up and Toby commented on this.

Just seems that he is getting hacked constantly with no calls or even a hint of calls. I will admit that in the second half yesterday they finally started calling some of them but WHY NOT ALL GAME. Doesn’t make any sense and if they continue to allow this it is bad for OU but also sad for the college game.

I have noticed the opposite of protection. An increase of offensive fouls on Trae while an increase of physicality guarding him. One example yesterday was the 3 point play possession Trae got the cut leg on, clearly bumped out at the top without a call. Easily seen again on the replay, never mentioned by the commentators.

I agree with both of these comments. It is amazing how much hand checking and pushing he endures while the ball is in his hands and this was supposed to be a point of emphasis. In the NBA he will get almost all of these calls AND the calls where he drives to the basket and gets hacked and gets no call i college.

Very sad that the Big-12 officials have decided this can go on. Castiglione and Lon and Boren should be on the phone and hammer the Big-12 office about this. IMO

One other question for the board. Almost every time Trae gets the ball after an inbound he looks like he takes a step BEFORE a dribble occurs. Sure looks like a walk each time, anyone else notice this. It just makes me nervous.

The emphasis on arm bars and hand checking officials were calling early in the season went away at the start of conference play. It’s like that every year. Early on, a defensive player couldn’t breathe on the guy with the ball without getting a call. Clearly that is not the case anymore.

As for Trae, he is definitely getting more offensive fouls called on him and fewer on the defenders now. You can bet the opposing coaches have been working the officials, telling them to keep an eye on Trae’s off arm to keep the defensive player at bay. That call can probably be made if you’re looking for it. But that in no way justifies the physical play TY is receiving from defenders now. He’s still getting calls, they’re just not as consistent as before.

Agreed, and hopefully Lon or somebody does their work on the phones to get some kind of balance back. in the NBA that will be called.

I've never been the one to question refs and how they call a game, imo teams need to adjust to how it is being called. I rather see a game with few fouls called then one where 70 FT's are shot. IMO the OU games that I seen the refs have done a pretty good job. Now the NBA on the other hand to me it's more like a WWE ref

No doubt about it. I have an idea that thought was behind the arm bar and hand checking emphasis we saw at the beginning of the season. It was not meant to give a defender the advantage, that’s for sure.

I’ve noticed it too and cringe whenever I see it. Traveling is quickly becoming a thing of the past. I just hope they don’t choose to call it late in a tight tourney game.

It was bound to happen, especially on the road. The flip side of that coin is that they are very rarely calling Trae for pushing off to create space every time he drives the ball.

I think the league might be involved in the ref's decision.....

I think it was the NBA championship finals of 2006.....Dwayne Wade would either shoot free throws or score every trip down the floor. If he shot and missed, the refs would call a foul.....It got old in a hurry. And I think the refs could call a foul almost every trip down the floor against the guy guarding Trae, but who wants to see Trae shoot 30 free throws every game????

But I've also argued that if Trae gets fouled every trip down the floor, he should get to shoot the free throws......

Yesterday, Toby mentioned that one of the fouls that Odomes got called on him was putting his hand on the guy out front.....something that happened to Trae but was not called. You could tell Toby was not liking the officiating....

Wayman was here for 3 years and each year the officials allowed more and more physical play against him.

The same was true for Courtney Paris.

The physical play against Blake was much worse his sophomore year than his freshman year.

It wasn't quite as bad for Buddy, but he didn't play in the lane a lot.

I don't pay close attention to superstars for other teams but I can only assume it's the same for them. I've never understood it. People pay money to see these players play basketball, not to see them held and mugged.

He should tell the refs that during the game Trae is going to drive past the defender and then stop, which will likely cause the defender to bump into Trae from behind and ask the crew if that's going to be called a foul. Surely the refs will just stare at him. Lon should then exclaim "do we need to forfeit the game now" and promptly walk away.

If you believe in something you take a stand. To some we're getting railroaded when a smallish player with skill is able to outmaneuver defensive players with less quickness only to be bullied around like a pinball fresh out of the shoot. It tends to equalize much of his game. A fair shake is deserved.
