Question

My take on the situation with Coach Capel is that he is both young and naive; however I believe he is intelligent and reflective so he can learn what to do in the future.

Maybe he should be a coach first, and a buddy second. It's a mistake many young teachers and/or coaches make...

As a first-year teacher, I can vouch for this.

If you don't take a hard line stance early on, it's virtually impossible to recover.

As for the Frank Martin stare... I wouldn't recommend anyone try that. Unless you look like a mafia boss, you'll just get laughed at.

There are two keys to getting young people to buy in early IMO:

1. figure out what they want. Make them work hard before you give it to them.

2. figure out what they don't want. Don't hesitate to dish it out when they cross the line (then pull back a bit as they start to get it).

In the case of basketball, playing time is often at the center of both of these. Players want to play. If they're not doing what you expect, sit them on the bench. If you can't find five guys who are doing what you expect... well, in that case you're kinda screwed, but as a college coach that's also probably your own fault.

there is no telling what Stu said to the mods to be banned

It is an extreme pity that the head coaching job at the University of Oklahoma has become a training ground for new young coaches.

Next time, one hopes that Joe C. finds a coach that has already learned his trade.

You said it better than I ever have and I've been saying this for 4 years. :clap

I hate to use Bob Stoops as an example of a young coach that had ZERO head-coaching experience, but ...

We've all read all the things Coach did to try to get through to the players who didn't buy into the 'team first' concept. Is there anything else that could have been tried?

Yes, he could have brought the whole team to the ford center this past weekend and had them watch a bunch of nobodys on Northern Iowa play like a team and look good doing it.

Why does this thread say there are two pages, but I can't click on the second page of posts? Glitch on the site here guys. I have noticed this a few other times.

edit: weird, now this post is actually on the second page. not sure what was going on there.

mods can we get this glitch fixed?

Strong words from a poster like SoonerTraveler. Interesting.
