We have talked for months about our concerns regarding rebounding. Most knew that when we lost Joanna, we were in trouble unless one of the freshmen could step up. Reality has set in and the results are not good.

Here are the leading rebounders:

Griffin- 34
Aaryn- 33
Kaylon- 33
Kornet- 26
Sharane- 24

When any team has to rely on a 5'7" (and that's plenty generous) to be a leading rebounder, you know you are in trouble. Without knowing how long Kornet will be sidelined, the future isn't favorable. We lost the rebounding battle to UCLA by a margin of 50-29. Williams can't stay in a game long enough to need a shower. Griffin is not going to attack the basket. I guess that leaves Aaryn and Sharane to lead the team and that's scary.

Rebounding is not rocket science it is a want to have the ball as Sherri stated. I am not sure what she can do during practice, but at sometime a light needs to come on with the players as I believe it did with Jo last year. A drill we use to have during my days was we would run our offense as normal, but when someone took a shot someone would yelled shot and then like 2 to 3 seconds later the coach blew the whistle which everyone would hold position or it was considered you didn't block out. At that time if you didn't have the person you were guarding blocked out in some manner everyone got to watch you do suicides for 5 minutes. It didn't take long for you to figure it out unless you just like to run.

Good post, that's really it, you have to want to. Kornet goes to the ball, Kaylon goes to the ball, and that's about it. Very few will follow their shot, and block outs are few a far between. Wyatt will find her man and block out, but forgets to go to the ball. I have no doubt that Sherri has them work on rebounding, I just don't know if there is a reward/punishment scenario when the kids lack intensity and focus on how important a fundamental it is. Yesterday was tough to watch, the Bruins constantly went to the ball, and wanted it worse than we did. I don't know what the answer is, but we need some kids that want to be "dirt diggers" and do the yeoman work of blocking out and rebound the basketball. We have some of the best talent that the coaches have recruited in a while, now they need to do the tough things needed to become a championship team.

A coach can teach the "techniques and fundamentals" of rebounding, but it requires the will to rebound which cannot be taught. Hopefully the recruiting will include players that have lots of "will". The fundamentals can be taught. Prime example...

And...who said, "CP couldn't jump?" I'll take a no jumping CP with 100K rebounds any day. And her sister wasn't bad either! Again...sheer will and want.

rebounding is a physical business and also requires either height or girth to be really good at it. I'm not sure we have a lot of either. Just don't think rebounding will be a strength of this team. We are really going to work hard at it to get by. There are a lot of issues related to this, including fundamentals, scheme and effort. Don't have an opinion on what the biggest issue is.

In any event, we were killed by UCLA on the boards last year and got better as the year wore on. So, hopefully, this situation will occur this year. Somehow, we just need to get a little better.

One of the things I have noticed is that some of the time the girls have blocked their person, but just stand their and watch the ball hit the floor. Uh it block out and then GO FOR THE BALL.

We were caught in the realm of lazy yesterday. We did watch the ball hit the floor between three Sooners, and not one reached for the ball. Many times, we had inside position, but didn't jump, waiting for the ball to drop into our hands.

But, that was also how we got some fouls. How many of our fouls were reach-in fouls after UCLA had done something to get past us? We weren't moving, and we had no aggression, except for Griffin's and Sharane's moves inside.

She to put a lid on the basket during practice and let them fight for rebounds. Whoever gets the most rebounds gets to play.
