Recruiting Fallout: What Capel's firing means to OU recruits

So we lose on some kids that Capel had built a relationship.

Surely the next coach has kids he is recruiting that he has built relationships with.

Tit for tat.

Agreed, it's not like when Sampson left and we lost a great recruiting class. Not one of the guys interviewed is going to sign anywhere until next fall at the earliest. What do need to do is hire the right guy and let him get to work. It' doesn't have to be this week, it doesn't have to be next week, heck I'd like it to be Final Four weekend so we get talked about a little and get some free publicity. Got to hope whomever we are going to get is busy for the next few weeks.

Nothing is guaranteed, TINY, but here's the way I see it.

If the new coach can do anything at all in signing a player or two in April, or bringing a commit or a recruit he may be in on with him, he will have surpassed anything we can be certain of if our former coach was still here.

My point is, it's not like we had a top-ranked recruiting class on the way or a long list of high-profile recruits waiting to sign an LOI next month. Far from it. Osby is without a doubt the best player in our 2011 class. He is already on campus and is not going anywhere. That leaves Goff, a pre-season JUCO AA who hasn't played like one this season. He is averaging 9.6 points and 6 boards in 28 games. If he doesn't make it to OU, I don't see that as a major cause for concern.

There is always the possibility that someone may transfer. I just don't think anyone who is projected to make a significant contribution next season will leave the program, providing Joe C. brings in the right coach and does it within a reasonable time. Why would any of those guys leave and sit the bench somewhere next year? Nothing about that makes sense to me. Sure, they're upset that Coach Capel is gone. That's human nature. No one expected them to be happy about it. None of us wanted to see him leave under these circumstances. But I believe the kids coming back next season will be fine, when they get over the shock and have time to think about why cutting Jeff loose was necessary.

Good points! I agree with you that it is not the same situation as when Sampson left because we let those studs out of their LOI. Goff may be the only casualty.

I for one really hope Goff still comes. He is not going to lead the team in scoring, but from everything I have heard he would be a huge upgrade in the rebounding & defense department from what we have now. We need him to boost our inside game. He has several very nice offers from coaches who obviously saw something in him. If Fitz is our best big again next season, Lord help us. Obviously, Osby will be an upgrade but he is not a C.

We do not even know who the next coach is, so I am not going to expect him to have some studs in the bag ready to come with him to OU. I wish i had the same optimism right now, but I just do not see many realistic options out there that are even available. They really need to change this early signing period thing, IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I would gladly take Goff if he still wants to come. I have already gone on record in saying that he will be an upgrade in size and depth to a front court that was sadly lacking in both areas this season. From what I was able to observe in the two games I saw, he is not someone who can be counted on to score a lot of points. But at 6' 9" 240, he could help us on defense and in rebounding.

I'm hoping there is more to his game than what I saw. There has to be a reason why he was a pre-season Juco AA who received some impressive offers last fall from several high-major schools.

Oh no!
It seems we've upset all the kids who wanted to become Jeff Capel's best friend and then play basketball at UNC!

lol very true...5 stars were always playing Capel till the end

I disagree i think they need to hire someone earlier than that and they need to let the team spend time with each canidate some players dont mind sitting out a season.I think it's a advantage to sit out if you dont know who you playing for.

Chico is Cam going to stay with OU and help lead them back?

I dont know his uncle nor his dad spoke of it and im afraid to ask his dad.

I thought that his dad was not a big fan of how Capel was using Cam. I think Buzz is a guy that keep Cam around, as Marquette was one of the final two or three for Cam.

I think BCG and Pastner could keep him around, too. As well as Terry Evans.

I doubt he stays if we hire Geno, or the ODU coach.

Maybe the UNT coach keeps him around as well.
