Recruiting question

It was a tournament, not one date, a tournament in which they played the best teams from the western hemisphere. There was a center from Canada. So, it wasn't an all-USA team.

Edit: She isn't even here yet. You don't know why they picked her on the team. You just put your trust in some nebulous rankings from people who probably weren't at the FIFA tournament, and you think she'll love OU? How negative can you possibly get?

Thoughts on the type of player last current scholarship should be used on? I think that unless it's a top 5 post player, Sherri should go for a big wing who can play both forward positions.

I don't mean to come off as negative about Penzo, I agree we shouldn't talk about kids until we see them get minutes on the court, was just thinking about the number opening up and if a player leaves who it might be.

You aren't being negative at all. It is reasonable to realize the possibility that one or more players might leave to find more playing time somewhere else. Everyone knows we have a logjam at the guard position. A newby is going to have to be really good to put Maddie, Peyton, etc on the bench.

Actually, it was negative, and I'm glad that Mac, upon reflection, noticed that.

Sherri said that there was a logjam at guard, but that Penzo was too good to pass up. Apparently, those who have coached against her and watched her at FIFA have a better feel for her abilities than some prospect list of Florida HS players made up of----whom?

I'm still going with Alexander. If what I've read, seen, and heard is indicative of her everyday play, she can play 1-3. Having that kind of versatility would be a great asset. I also think she could help with 2016 recruiting.

syb,
my main point about your emphasis on the tourney will be to see if it's translates into her actual college potential.

Not that you are wrong to place the emphasis or Sherri's wrong to have signed her based on her play in the tourney versus her limited US HS career to date.

More that if the all star team nomination is a more accurate predictor based on her US teammates rankings that Penzo is more like a top 30 recruit. Not a 3 star barely evaluated player.
And to be fair, I cannot find any recruiting service that appears to have evaluated her senior year to any meaningful degree.

I don't think she has been evaluated by any service, not that it matters. What is known is that she was among the best players in the western hemisphere, and she was thought to be among the top five. But, there was another tournament in which she starred as well.

Notice the comment about Penzo in the next to last paragraph, the only player about whom there is such a comment. You also have to keep in mind that Penzo played on the Puerto Rico U-16 team in 2011, at the age of 14, and her stats were even better. She is only 16 now.

In the 2013 FIBA tournament, Penzo led Puerto Rico as they almost upset Canada as Penzo led Puerto Rico with six steals and rebounds. She did it all.

A McDonald's All-America nominee? For a three star?

Notice that the other players who were in the FIBA tournament will not even be in college this year. They are all juniors or seniors in highschool. Penzo will be at OU---at 16 (unless she turns 17 before enrolling). Cox, Durr, and Samuelson will be seniors in HS. If Penzo were to have played HS this year, think she might have been elevated to a four or five star?

Prospect Nation has definitely seen her play. I strongly suspect Bluestar has as well. The reason she was offered is because Sherri loves guards and she went to watch ViVi play and she said, there was just something about Penzo I liked so I offered her. Not that WOW, I just had to have her. Not that, she's the best I've ever seen! She said, there was something about her I liked. She wasn't highly recruited by college coaches who saw her play. One of the guys at Prispect Nation said she is a nice player who is very smooth but not that fast.

As she gets older and more experienced perhaps she will be able to earn some minutes but I don't think it is likely she will play much the first year or two. For anyone to think she will be a starter ahead of Maddie or Peyton, they must not think much of those already on the roster. This team will go as far as Gabbi, Kornet, Maddie, and Peyton will take it. Whatever minutes Penzo will get will benefit her but I think they will be very limited for the next couple of years. That brings up the question, will she be willing to sit awaiting her opportunity to play or will she look at other schools? That is yet to be determined.

Norm,
It will be interesting to track her progress based on her international tourney success.
That's my main point. Her int'l profile is higher than her HS profile. Which is the better predictor.

I agree. I really hope she becomes a great player. It will be interesting to see who becomes the better player, she or LaNesia Williams.

This will be an interesting incoming class to follow. We may have just put together the best class in OU history. There are some unknowns.

Basically, we know that everyone likes Ortiz. She can probably be one of the better points guards around as a freshman if the scouting is right. She brings ball-handling and passing skills with the shooting of Vegas.

I have no clue on LaNesia. She is supposedly the faster and better scorer of that title team with Edwards. But, I haven't seen one minute of her.

Penzo is a fascinating prospect. Only 16, she was a starter for the Puerto Rico national U-16 team at the age of 14. She's been to the tournament twice, most recently being named to the All-tournament team. But, that is only one of three tournaments from which we have positive reports. They also liked her in the Centrobasket U-15 tournament in Mexico as well as the Naples, FL tournament which had some good things to say about her. While the other 16-year-olds will be seniors in highschool this year, she is headed to Norman.

There is another aspect to the Penzo recruitment that is potentially fascinating. She is the FIRST D-1 scholarship from Monteverde Academy earned by the girls' team. If you haven't heard of Monteverde, they were by far the #1 boys team in the nation this year. They had something like 8 players on the team that got D-1 scholarships, from large D-1 type schools: Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Florida, etc. I watched them blow away Oak Ridge like they weren't even there, and Oak Ridge is a traditional power. Monteverde has kids from something like thirty-five states and thirty foreign countries, and they have built a basketball giant. They had three starters in the men's final four this year, two from Florida and one from Kentucky. We just got the first D-1 scholarship from the women's program from this basketball giant. What does the future hold for Monteverde girls?

Pierre-Louis is a recent player, not much basketball experience. But, she was beginning to draw a lot of raves and led her team to the state finals before tearing her ACL. She is said to have improved her post game, but she can also play facing the basket, hitting fifty percent from three during HS. She is big enough to command her position under the boards and athletic enough to contend. I think she can help this year, as soon as she is released which is supposedly October.

Treece is interesting. I watched a video of her as a junior. Not much to see. I don't think they passed the ball to her once. The point guard does most of the shooting. I saw a report that said that she was a bit passive on the boards. A couple of years later, a report said she was aggressive on the boards. She grew up? She seems to have a shot. Her scoring was the reason she won the MVP of the Naples tournament.

Her reports don't seem to rank her that highly. But, I saw another report that put her in the top sixty. She comes from a basketball factory, and they do seem to have a lot of players. They won the state title without her, I think.

There is reason to believe that all five of these players has something to offer. Somebody liked each of them a lot. Pierre-Louis seemed to be gaining a lot more respect this year. The rankings aren't that high, but sources other than the rankings liked what they saw. It wouldn't surprise me if this group produced three or four of our starters be the end of their second year. I'm a bit more inclined to go along with those who watched them or coached against them than by some scouting group for a magazine. The people they played against liked them.

Also Treece has a Younger sister Who is already 6'5 And in
The class of 2017! Madison Treece. And also another sister maybe in the 5th or
6th grade who is going to be a Giant as well.

Sounds like A new Era of the McFarland Sisters.

Looks like to me at this time that the class of Carter, Edwards, Wyatt, Kellogg etc. was really weak. Maybe not a starter in that group long term when everyone else is healthy.
