Unfortunately, for OU in basketball, it just doesn't take much to go from being on the cusp of greatness right into mediocrity. Following the '89-'90 season, OU looked like a team that would head into '90-'91 as the preseason #2 team in the country behind UNLV. However, 4 players were declared academically ineligible, and it was NINE YEARS before OU won an NCAA Tournament game.
To go from being the preseason #2 team in America to eight consecutive years without winning an NCAA Tournament game was demoralizing to say the least. Now, we are experiencing this again. We went from being one game away from the Final Four to being a team that can't beat Chauminade. This drop is much worse because at least OU was highly competitive during the 1990s, something we aren't right now.
I'm still one of the half dozen or so posters on the Jeff Capel bandwagon, but have made it clear I won't be there for long if I keep seeing the same EFFORT shown against UVA and the D-II school. I certainly don't want to go 8 straight years without winning an NCAA Tournament game again, so that should tell you my thoughts on the possiblity of two straight losing seasons.
Coach still has a chance to turn things around here, but it has to start happening NOW, at least in the effort department. If the EFFORT is there, I believe the wins will start following.
