I agree. The guy is 6'8" and hustles and hits the board hard. He would be invaluable in scrimmages next season, and has a good chance of being in the top 8 players (top 3 post players) in a couple of years. I think it's almost a no-brainer.
Adjust that to 5-7 if you wish, the point remains the same. We need players like Spangler to get where we want to be.
Those stats really did say something.Spangler led the team in REB/40 minutes
Spangler - 14.3
Harris - 11.7
Sacre - 9.5
Hart - 8.8
Dower - 8.2
In my opinion the most important trait of an athlete is hand-eye coordination. I would then rank vision, decision making/reaction time, and quickness above speed and vertical jump. Strenth is another factor that has to be considered. You don't have to have all of these attributes to be great. KD is great but he is not strong. Kevin Love is great but he does not possess a huge vertical, instead he uses his strength and other attributes to out rebound people that jump higher than him.
Just depends on who else is coming in, he would add some depth, but (Spangler) is not a high impact player.
korcheck is an impact player in year 2 i don't think spangler is
My personal opinion is that he is AT BEST a 4th or 5th big man on a good (ie, make the NCAA Tournament) OU team. I don't think he has the size or athleticism to really excel in the Big 12. If his best trait is rebounding, as small as he is, he probably projects to be a lot like C.J. Washington. And that is fine, so long as it's no more than the 2nd big off the bench.
You guys are kind of supporting my point. If his game is banging, and rebounding, how effective is he going to be in the Big 12 at 6'7, 220-230 pounds? That is about Washington's size, and while he was good on the glass FOR HIS SIZE, we all complained about his lack of size/athleticism all season. Not to mention it appears LK wants a 4 that can be pretty versatile. I don't put Spangler in that category. I'm not trying to knock the kid, but looking at his offers out of HS, watching a little film on him, seeing his body size at Gonzaga, I just don't see it.
I don't know what TU's big man situation is, exactly, but he might be a better fit there.
Spangler is not your typical Kruger 4-man, doubt he lands at OU.
Would like him at OU but ORU or TU would be a great fit for him!
To me this is pretty simple, unlike HS kids and JUCO kids [generally] CLK will have had an opportunity to review game film of Spangler against D-1 opposition as a freshman, if CLK thinks he is good enough to contribute and takes him as a transfer, then I'm going to go ahead and go with his opinion.
To summarize ...
LOL! Just glad I did not post an opinion on this thread.
I think I will follow the advice of Mr.B!!! on these matters in the future ...
_Ryan Spangler is by all accounts a fine young man.
_He's a good athlete who obviously loves to bang inside and go after rebounds and loose balls with a vengeance.
_He's a former football player who would bring a toughness to the team that has not been evident in all of our players the past three years.
_He's an Oklahoma kid who may want to come back home.
What is there to talk about? If he wants to transfer to OU, I say give him a scholarship! He may be a bit raw on the offensive end. But at 6' 8" 225, he has the potential to develop into a very good player in time. His 29.8 points, 17.4 rebounds, six blocks and 4.5 assists averages as senior at Bridge Creek was impressive by any measures you care to use.
Id like to clarify... When he got on board, I predicted a double double AVG.... And he would've been a great fit at ORU and TU. lol
