Sad news regarding Coach Tubbs

damn....prayers for him and his family...I LOVED Billy Ball...Skeeter Meeter!

He was entertaining both on and off the court. He had that fiery, antagonistic personality which people like from a coach (at least they did back in his day). If you were in the trenches of a military conflict I would want coach Tubbs by my side for I looked upon him as someone you could count on regardless of the situation. We knew not only him, but his entire family as well from his wife, son Tommy and his daughter Taylor.

Sad news indeed...my heart goes out to his family.

If someone were to ask me what was Coach Tubbs legacy at OU, I don't know how to answer that. He put us on the college basketball map, inked and coached the best player in school history, coached the best team in school history, signed the best recruiting class in school history, had a 7-year run that will never be matched, and of course, had that flamboyant "us against the world" mentality.

What I will remember most was that 7-year run from 1984-1990. We lost TWO home games. Think about that for a moment - two home losses in SEVEN years...won't happen again at OU in our lifetimes. After an embarrassing 30-point loss to UNLV in the 1990 NCAA Final, Coach K wanted to alter Duke's OOC schedule for the following season to better prepare for March. Tops on his agenda was to take his team to Norman, OK, and try to end OU's nation-longest home-court winning streak. They did that indeed, and wound up winning their first title that spring. It shows you the level of respect there was for Coach Tubbs and the OU hoops program back then.

I was a student from 85-88, and attending home games during that time was as much fun for us as going to the football games....

Sad news. I grew up on OU basketball with coach Tubbs. Best OU coach ever. Deserved the national title in 1988. This sucks. Praying for a peaceful transition for him and his family. He had a great life.

1986 against a Final Four bound Kansas team.
1987 against K-State on Senior Night when we blew a ten-point lead (or so) with about 90 seconds to go. Lon Kruger was the coach.

As time goes by, it's hard for people to fathom just how good we were and how rabid the fan base was for Sooner Hoops. It doesn't even seem real.

He's the single most important person in our basketball program's history. I'm not sure who #2 would be, but I know he's lightyears ahead. The way he's blessed this program will never be forgotten. Prayers going out to him and his family.

Insane. I was too young to enjoy much of the Tubbs era, but I remember marveling at some of KS' home winning streaks. If I'm not mistaken, we had the longest non-conference home winning streak in the country when he left, and I still think TJ Ford is the devil for ending our 37 home game winning streak on senior night for Hollis, Ebi, and Quannas. One home loss in two years seemed unreal...you'd have to run that back four times to match what Tubbs did. Amazing.

Wow. I had no idea. What a beast

My fondest basketball memories when I was a kid was watching those Billy Tubbs teams. It seemed like the players were larger than life. Tisdale, Choo Kennedy, Anthony Bowie, Tim Mcalister, Mookie, Dave Seger, Stacey King, the list goes on and on.

His teams played so hard on both ends. Of course Coach Tubbs, aside from being a great coach, was probably the wittiest guy I ever saw interviewed. He will be missed.
