SAPULPA — With the Chieftains struggling to separate themselves from a pesky Booker T. Washington bunch, Brice Calip knew her team needed the senior to step up.
“My team depends on my momentum,” said the Sapulpa senior guard. “When I got going, that’s when we got going.”
Tied at 43 with five minutes left in the game, Calip got going with a personal 12-0 run as she finished with a game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds to help the Class 6A No. 6 Chieftains pull away for a 62-50 victory in the semifinals of the Sapulpa Holiday Classic on Wednesday night.
Chelsea Dungee added 23 points for the Chieftains (4-0), who advanced to face 6A No. 8 Midwest City (7-1) Thursday afternoon in the championship game. The Bombers upset top-ranked Broken Arrow in the other semifinal game.
Aiys El-Hassan led the Hornets (6-2) with 11 points. BTW shot 45 percent from the floor (18-of-40) as it battled back from an early seven-point deficit against the tournament host.
Hassan scored in the late with 3:05 left in the third quarter to give the Hornets a 33-32 lead, their first since leading 2-0. Kambri Davison tied the game early in the fourth quarter, 43-43, before Calip’s scoring flurry.
Calip made her first 16 free throws and finished 17-of-18 from the foul line. Dungee made 13-of-17 free throws as Sapulpa finished 32-of-37 overall.
“They’re so quick on the perimeter that we had to attack the basket and get to the free throw line to have some success,” Sapulpa coach Darlean Calip said.
B.T. Washington (6-2): El-Hassan 11, Sells 9, Hamilton 8, Jackson 7, Fennell 6, Davison 3, Ellis 2, Richardson 2, Anderson 2.
Sapulpa (4-0): Calip 25, Dungee 23, Brooks 6, Bacon 6, Kamies 2.
