Scott Drew has Baylor on the Duke Path

Baylor has benefited by getting a great draw close to home and playing the worse possible seed so far. There is more evidence to believe they will continue to under perform than have years like this one.

that's just silly. Don't evaluate them only by what has happened in March. Baylor has been a VERY good team all season long...and this tourney just verifies that.

I don't think he's the next coach K or anything - but he does deserve kudos for building a solid group at Baylor and nurtured a program that looks like it will continue to prosper.

Why do people want to crown a guy the next Coach K after 1 good season? Baylor finished the conference on a 2-11 run last year. They missed the NCAA tourney last year with 3 seniors starting who were pretty dang good.

Kevin Rogers was a nice player, nothing special.
Curtis Jerrells was a "me first" player, Tweety is a significant upgrade.
Henry Dugat was TERRIBLE as a senior.

My analogy with Duke is based on two things.

1. Small private school fortunate to play in a major conference.
2. An inherent recruiting advantage. For Duke it's the academics and for Baylor it's the Baptists.

IN basketball it only takes a couple of the top rated guys to be strong in academics or have a mommy that wants her baby attending a baptist school and the recruits keep coming year after year.

Whatever man, so Baylor is going to win multiple national titles and make about 10 Final Fours over the next 20 years? Somehow I doubt that.

Baylor benefited from the South being really weak this year. Texas was down. OU was way down. Oklahoma State is still a little down. A&M is better than they've ever been but that's about it. The rest of the South stunk this year.

in reference to LeBryan Nash, I will be surprised if he signs with OSU. He is related to Byron Eaton and they have led early for his services. But I believe momentum is changing there. He will likely sign in the Spring of 2011. I believe OSU is going to struggle next year without Obi and Anderson. They don't have any difference makers coming in. Page and Penn are nice players, but you really can't play both of them at the same time due to the defensive liability.

LeBryan has liked Baylor and has a tight relationship with Perry Jones. His mom has questioned whether Baylor was big time enough for her son. But this year has completely changed that perception.

Latest quotes directly out of LeBryan's mouth about Baylor:

Nash said Baylor's rise as a program and this season's success is making a difference.

"It's had a huge impact," Nash said. "It will be so fun to see how far we can go if I go there. And Coach Drew is showing that he can really coach and I know he can coach me."

The fact the Baylor program is bringing in McDonald's All-American Perry Jones of Duncanville next season doesn't hurt Nash's outlook on the future.

"We always wanted to play together," Nash said. "If he stays for more than one year, that might influence my decision."

Now I personally believe Perry Jones is a two year player for Baylor. He is extremely skilled but lacks the killer instinct of a Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, etc... He reminds me of Greg Monroe as far as great overall skill but a little on the laid back side. So if he comes back for year 2 and I think he will, this significantly helps Baylor in getting a commitment from LeBryan Nash.

Baylor has a long way to go to be compared to Duke. Scott Drew took over a much tougher situation than Coach K took over at Duke in the early 80s. Duke had been a national title contender with Mike Gminski and Gene Banks prior to Coach K. Baylor was an unmitigated disaster when Drew took it over.

What he has done there has been remarkable. But he has a lot going for him- location; commitment from Baylor to facilities; great conference; the freedom to build it the way he wanted to and the patience to allow him some growing pains.

Baylor has some big money donors who love basketball. I expect that Drew will be paid top 15 in the nation money and will stay at Baylor. He's a great fit for the school. And what he has built is his baby. I don't know if he will have the success of a Coach K. He's a totally different personality. Drew has more in common with a guy like John Wooden than Coach K from a personality standpoint.

They will not fade into oblivion though. They will miss Carter and Lomers much more than people will think. But AJ Walton is going to be a terrific player for Baylor. Great on the ball defender and knows how to distribute. Having Tweety mentor him is going to pay huge dividends for AJ.

Ekpe will likely go pro and they will miss him. But the cupboard is not bare. They have Cory Jefferson, Anthony Jones, Perry Jones, Dragan Sekelja and Quincy Acy. These are all players with tremendous physical skills and a desire to work hard and improve.

Baylor will get either Quincy Miller or LeBryan Nash for 2011- both are top 10 in the nation types. They should be able to maintain consistent NCAA tournament teams going forward.
if Baylor didn't have all the players mentioned in the above post, they would have been one and done in this tournament

;) they would have been one and done from the big12 tournament as a 12 seed without those players also. I always find humor when someone like Nick says a team would be one and done without such and such great player. Really? Captain Obvious... I'm sure Evan Turner on any Big 12 basketball team would make them a much better team as well.

Why is it every single year there are high profile players that want to play together but it never ever happens, yet people continue to say that they like each other so that is a plus. IMO OSU has the better shot at Lebryan and if he doesn't choose OSU he will go outside the big 12.

In every published interview, outside of baylor controlled media, he mentions OSU. Even OUhoops interviewed him and he mentioned OSU a few different times.

Baylor will struggle next year without a decent pg.

Sorry DFW but I don't think you are correct in what you're saying. I don't agree with your assessment of OSU either. Plenty of difference makers coming in.

OK... so here's a big head scratcher for me...

Wait. What?

Wait. What?

Baylor is loaded with hot little baptist blondes dying for some inner-city bad boy to deflower them.

it's a fact.

same with SMU btw - 'cept they're usually brunettes, daddy has money, and they usually come with a friend attached who will be just as freaky at the same time.

Stop the presses. An aggie who is confused about something that is common knowledge.

Tell you what ag, take your kids to Highland Park Baptist Church or thousands of other Baptist churches around the country and see what type of literature starts showing up in the mail.

LOL.

I've been taken to task by the Ralph Wiggum of the OUhoops board.

"That's unpossible"
