Second unit sparks OU to easy victory [Norman Transcript]

Re: Second unit sparks OU to easy victor [Norman Transcript]

OU was lethargic in the opening minutes, but it was that bench crew that got things going.

Don't believe he watched the game...

UCO almost took the lead with the second unit on the floor in the first half..

Yep. Then the lead extended again when the 1st unit came back out.

He certainly didn't see the game I watched. If not for Hield, UCO would have taken the lead with the second unit on the floor.

To the second unit's credit, though, they played a lot better in the second half. Tyler, Cam and Fitz hit the boards hard, and they played good defense. Drew and Cam just didn't provide much offense.

It worries me a bit; if he's not starting, we're really counting on Fitz to provide some scoring punch off the bench. I hope it's just a matter of Fitz adjusting to a new role so to speak.

Didn't you hear Tubbs? Hield is not the second unit!

cfin, I think what we're seeing is Fitz adjusting to a new role, one where he has to do more than take short range jump shots from his favorite spots. He was getting good shots, they just didn't go in.

Nevertheless, I liked what I saw. He's at least a step quicker than before, which allows him get to more loose balls and rebounds. I think he'll be fine. Drew is a solid role player, which to be perfectly honest is where he needs to be. The second unit didn't play all that well in the first half. But, unlike last year, I believe they will hold on to or even build on leads when called on this season.

No, Tubbs was a row down and forty feet or more from me, I couldn't hear anything he said. What did Billy mean? Was he implying that Hield should be starting or that the second unit is more than Buddy Hield? I agree on both counts.

Re: Second unit sparks OU to easy victor [Norman Transcript]

Good point, Ada. His effort in other areas has been night and day from previous seasons. To be fair, I don't think we could afford for him to be too aggressive on the boards and defensively due to depth issues. If we can find a way to get the scoring punch of the first unit and combine it with the rebounding effort of the second, we could be a lot better than most of us hoped.

The play by play guy was making a point about the 2nd unit was out there on the floor or referred to Hield as a second unit guy and Tubbs said Hield is the first one off the bench and is therefore part of the 1st unit.

Gonna be interesting to see how LK substitutes this year. I don't think I've ever seen a major college team basically play two sets of players like we have in the two exhibition games. I'd like to think LK is just doing it for those games, but it seems a little odd not to mix and match a bit, especially in the 2nd halves of these games. Curious to see what LK has in store for the regular season.

I think that comment about Hield was made in part b/c even though he came off the bench, he was playing with 4 starters at that point. Pretty tough to give his points to the second unit, when 4 of the 5 guys on the court are starters.

i guess. but I think the pbp guy was just referring to bench scoring as 2nd unit.

Kruger did mix and match some in the second half. I'm just not smart enough to pick out the best combinations he tried. I think we may see more of that later on, until he settles on his top eight or so, and even that may depend on how he wants to match up with the teams we're playing.

This quote from the Soonerscoop.com article on another thread may give us some insight into how Kruger feels about going with ten or more players:

Kruger was pleased with his team, and said he likes the idea of playing “10 to 11 guys” during the non-conference schedule, but whether he keeps playing that many men is up to them.

“Guys know we want to play a lot of people,” Kruger said. “So if they step in and do the things necessary and get the production necessary there is no reason to shorten up. They will determine that by how they’re playing and their production and the little things meshed together.”
