I am sorry, but 7% isn't even as high as the national average.

All SI has uncovered is that, on average, football players commit fewer crimes or have cleaner records than the average joe shmoe.

If this is the "historic news" that SI has uncovered to make the NCAA "snap into action" then they need to head to Blanchard and write a feature on Bessie the cow birthin' some veal.

First thing I realized when this was released...they poured money into resources for this story and are trying to hype it up.

Really isn't that big of a deal.

That article is absolute BS. I opened up SI this morning and was immediately pissed off about that...I haven't read it yet, and I don't plan on it. It's ridiculous...I mean really, who the **** cares?

if the NCAA really bends over backwards to respond to this then I also am going to be peeved.

it's absolutely ludicrous and really shows that these people are idiots when it comes to understanding those numbers.

i agree but however, anything that makes boise state look bad i LOVE!
Freakin' Thugs!!!

I think the point of the story is legitimate. Guys are getting and keeping scholarships with questionable records.

I would rather OU lose at sports than field of team of guys that had been involved in violent crimes. I do think kids should still be able to participate in sports when they have minor offenses.

if these guys were 30-35 Denver then I might agree with you...but these are still kids.

It's really hard to take a 20 year old and say "the next 60 years of your life are ruined now thanks to that one decision ... so we're baling on you".

Plus this may be one of the few shots they get at having a support system around to correct the deficient behavior.

I am all for giving a kid a second chance due to vandalism, shop lifting, petty theft (breaking into a car), drinking, drug use and perhaps other things but some things merit serious consequences. Severely beating another person, rape, armed robbery, and most felonies are severe enough that I would say no scholarship.

Exactly. IMO, the amount of time devoted to this article (didn't this take a few months?) was basically meaningless, because it essentially reiterates what most of us know already: That kids are going to make mistakes.

SI would have been much better off devoting its time to a development that not many people would know, and concurrently have the potential in telling a story that is rare and corruptible to college athletics, like say, the Cam Newton scandal.

oh sure. there are offenses at which I'd draw a line. But non-violent property offenses, simple A&B's, and substance abuse issues...all of which were cited in the article like harbingers of wretchedness ... don't meet that category IMO.

I agree with the caveat that I don't know the degrees of A&B and therefore am not certain what would constitute simple A&B but assume getting in a fight (a punch or two thrown) or pushing someon is simple A&B.

I fully apprecaite that they used a very broad category to make the problem look much worse than it is. However, the examples that were actually written about don't sound good.

It's more than 7 percent. That was just a number. They didn't put in those numbers stuff like open container, driving with a suspended license, etc...
They also couldn't get records in some states especially juvi records. States like Texas and California they said was virtually impossible to get any records.

They said the number is higher than that. That was just low end base number.

From the title of the thread, I thought you were talking about our 1st shooting precentage at Tech.

No, when they did a news report previewing the story it was 7%.

That was straight from the authors mouth. Bolding it doesn't make it More right.

it's hard for me to discern what's what when I put all that quote stuff in so it's force of habit ...didn't mean to offend the grammar nazi in you.
