Hearing sources that Shaka Smart is close to a deal with Texas... that would suck for us, he can coach.

Be interesting to see how that style of play goes over the in the Big 12. I'm not sure he'll keep playing that same way. You get better talent, you don't need a gimmick system as much, and the 1-2 year NBA guys prob won't want to play that way.

I think it'll probably be a decent hire for them, but I don't know that it scares me at all.

I would agree it's a decent hire, but nothing about Shaka really worries me. He had a couple of decent team that got hot. Not much more.

The past couple of ex-VCU coaches haven't done so well when they got jobs at bigger schools. DOn't forget that...it's a different game.

I used to use this argument as well... then I looked at how those other coaches even did at VCU before going anywhere else:

Capel - 4 season; 79-41 overall (.658); ONE NCAA tourney appearance (lost in 1st round), 1 NIT tournament (lost in 1st round). 2 years without postseason

Anthony Grant - 3 seasons; 76-25 overall (.752); 2 NCAA tourneys (lost in 1st and 2nd round); 1 NIT tourney (lost in 1st round).

Shaka Smart - 6 seasons; 163-56 overall (.744); 5 NCAA tourneys (1 final four, 2 rounds of 32, 2 first round losses) Interestingly, those go in order, so he's gotten worse every year? Made postseason every year.

So really Capel was the longest shot of all. We hired him after a 19-10 year when they got 5th in the conference and didn't make a postseason tournament. He didn't have a single postseason win, and only even made the postseason half of his 4 years there.

Anthony Grant's resume was so short in only 3 seasons, and he only had 1 NCAA win in 3 chances.

Shaka has made the postseason every year, CBI in 1st year, and NCAA every other year. We remember the historic run, but he hasn't made a sweet 16 since, and after 2 years of 1 win, they have lost their first round game the last 2 years. Not trending the right direction. Maybe he follows Grant and Capel in not succeeding after VCU, but his resume is certainly better there than the other two.

They're also playing in a much, much better conference than they were in the Capel/Grant years. The A10 is a very solid league.

My concern with Shaka going to Texas isn't so much his coaching prowess but how effective a recruiter he could be there.

If he's a good coach, his system will be tailored around recruits.

He is an exciting hire, will get the state excited about UT basketball...which isn't a good thing for OU.

I agree. He is young and energetic, and will get after it on the recruiting trail. And unlike the situation that contributed to Capel's failure at OU, you can actually land elite recruits from anywhere at Texas, while having a crap ton of talent located in your back yard.

Most people on here believe we saw what happens when you couple great recruiting without the coaching prowess, and at the same school too.

I think Shaka would be a great hire for Texas. He will do well.

He will be the Kevin Sumlin to texas basketball

He can coach but we have a pretty damn good coach to. Bring it on.
