For those who remember more of the details than I do, please refresh us on how the NCAA handled his final "year" of eligibility.

I remember being told it was handled as poorly as one could ever imagine.
 
I wouldn't swear to it but it seemed like he was declared ineligible before the season started for improper contact with an agent and that was it. That's all I remember.

He was an unbelievably gifted athlete.
 
The only thing I can find is that in October of '85 the school decided not to use him in any games until the Big 8 ruled on his eligibility. And I can't find any reference to them subsequently doing so one way or another. I'll keep looking, but this sounds like a job for NMSooner80's memory.
 
That's who I was hoping would reply (NMSooner'80).

The bad part of the story, or at least the little I remember, is that they came around after the season and basically said, "oh, yeah, he would've been eligible, but now he's out of eligibility." Something of that nature....
