Should Sooner games be more like Thunder games?

I've noticed the screaming PA guy in the Thunder games I've watched on TV - both home and away. It makes me cringe when watching on TV. I can't imagine how annoying it is in person. I hope we NEVER have a PA guy as loud and annoying as the NBA.

I like some of the stuff OU does during timeouts - the 'Kiss Cam' and the 'Dance Cam' are cute. I wouldn't care if we never saw movie clips on SoonerVision. That could be a generational thing. I like a little bit of piped in music, but in general, I would rather hear the pep band.

There seem to be 2 types of fans who attend college & NBA games:

1) Those who attend to see and be seen.
2) Those who can go to a high school basketball game and be completely entertained by a good basketball game w/o all the bells and whistles of college and the NBA.

We need more of number 2 and less of number 1.

i go to 2-3 Nuggets games a year here in CO. that's about all i can take....i just find all that stuff pretty moronic.

like Univision doing the Arena Football League....is the endpoint.

but, that's clearly what people like and i'm in the minority. i like sports.....not "sports-entertainment".

David Stern -

"We're not in the basketball business, we're in the entertainment business."

Correct me if Im wrong but I dont think OU officials can pump in music during the game at anytime. Thats Y you always see the band or the PA shut off when the whistles starts play.

We need more people who are entertained by bad baskeball? 95% of high school basketball is a joke, lacking fundamentals and reeks of poor coaching.

This is true, the NBA has a completely different operations agenda.

Perhaps I should have been more specific. The last time I looked, the smaller schools still practices fundamentals and weren't overly enamoured with dunking.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'll watch a high school basketball game if it involves an elite prospect, but most high school games are terrible to watch unless you have some vested interest in one of the schools or players. I've tried watching local high school games on Cox, and they're just brutal.

Whats with the really loud, obnoxious screaming black guy at NBA events? Where is he? Is he pacing the sidelines? Up in a booth? He seems to be separate from the PA guy, and his job apparently is to just yell stuff and get the crowd going.

You have to remember that 40% of the Thunder fans are used to this sort of garbage at OSU football games.

Practice only works if kids imply the skills during games. As of this weekend, I have worked 127 middle school and high school games year-to-date. 95% of them were complete garbage. They tried hard, if that's what makes you all warm and fuzzy inside.

Perhaps small school basketball in OK is different from Texas. When I see a large school game on TV, I find it fairly unwatchable. But I enjoy small school games where they have a good crowd and the teams are competitive - if not perfect.

None of this is new ... what was experienced was a standard NBA/pro event. But I do agree. It's like attending a concert/circus/tractor pull with a sporting event there to entertain you on the side.

the absence of bad fundamentals is an argument *for* the NBA?

which bizzaro world did i wake up in? :D

Not sure how you can say the people of OKC don't know basketball. Sure, the Thunder have bandwagon fans, they're a young exciting team. Just because you know three people who are fans of being fans doesn't give rise to broad, blanketing statements like you made

coolm believes nobody knows basketball like him, so in his opinion the people of OKC don't know basketball.

1) OU games can't be like Thunder games (if anyone wants that) without vamping up the budget for entertainment. They put a lot of money into marketing for their contests and timeout breaks. They also have a more consistent stream of decent halftime performers (although not *always* great).

2) I don't really want OU games to be like Thunder games. I understand trying to being a little more dynamic during breaks, but I don't think it's really had an effect on attendence. I would rather go back to the band playing between all of the breaks...I miss that.

It's easier to get a larger attendance at a NBA game because of the product on the court. I don't think it has much to do with the in between stuff. NBA games are different than college games and they should be. Just like NFL games are different than college football games.

Joe C needs to get the Chinese lady who catches bowls on her head for every halftime show. Never get tired of watching that act, most unappreciated talent in the United States.
