Lineup against Arizona:

2B Clifton
3B Romero
CF Pendley
1B Knighten
RF Aviu
LF Hatfield
DP Mendes
C Wodac
SS Arnold

SP Parker

OU 1-0 after four. The only run was on an error on a Hatfield ground ball when they threw into right trying to get Aviu. Aviu scored.

OU lost 3-4 to Arizona.

With the bases loaded and two out, a slow roller to Knighten. She threw it away trying to throw it to first. They called it a walk-off single that scored two runs.

In an attempt to better understand why the Sooners have already lost the same number of games this year that they lost all of year I have been analyzing box scores. It appears the biggest discrepancy between this year and last year is the difference between home runs hit and home runs allowed.

Last year after 26 games we had hit 26 home runs and allowed 17. This year after 26 games we have hit 12 home runs and allowed 21. Comparing the two seasons last year we were a +9 home runs. This year we are a -9 home runs. That is a significant difference of 18 home runs year over year. Home runs allowed are the major contributor to 4 (Auburn, Washington, Notre Dame and Arizona) of our 5 defeats. Seven solo home runs accounted for over half of the 13 runs scored in the four one run defeats. One came in the seventh inning of tie ballgames for the victory.

OU 8 Santa Barbara 1
Errors by Santa Barbara. Home run by Romero. They can't keep Mendes off the bases. She drove in the first run in the third. Hit the ball hard every time. Parker allowed a solo home run. Lopez relieved in the seventh.

Notice that some of these losses have been at home---against unranked teams. Florida claims a #1 team, but their loss was at home to an unranked and winless Maryland team. Auburn has lost twice at home. A&M has two losses at home against unranked teams.

We win, 6-4. Thank you, Nicole Mendes. In her first game as the leadoff hitter, she goes four for four with two doubles a triple and a walk. She scored three and drove in one. That is four of our six runs.

Lowary had control issues. Lopez relieved and was perfect.

Mendes hitting 524.

Cal Poly beats Sooners 3-1 on a one hitter, home run by Romero. Lopez takes the loss. This is eighth game of the season the Sooners have been held to 2 runs or less. Last year for the season we scored two runs or less only 5 times. Quality pitching continues to be a big problem for this team.

Romero's HR was her third in I think the last 4 games. Also went 7 for 16 (.438).

OU loses 3-1 to Cal Poly again. Team is really in bad shape for host a super-regional with this loss. No opportunity for any quality wins except Baylor. Parker takes another loss and allowed another HR (#13). Her record is now 8-5 with 1.85 era. She was 38-3 last year with 1.64 era.

Hitting - the lack of - is our problem. Not pitching, not fielding, just lack of hitting, especially clutch hitting makes the opponents pitching look good ( a few are good but not as good as we make them) while we look just barely above average, mostly.

Fire Gasso! Jk

That's a good one (the first quote). Second quote is absolutely true. Our pitching has been solid so far, and we could easily be undefeated if our hitting had been up to par with last year's.

I, and a few other posters, stuck our necks out last week and went on record saying we believe the Sooners will still host a super regional. But now I'm no longer sure we will win the Big 12 and get to host even a regional. But, again, I'm not concerned with our pitching – the hitting is what will kill our chances if it doesn't start to come around soon.

Actually, Parker is almost exactly on track with ERA.
2015 1.65
2016 1.64
2017 1.78

What is different is that she has allowed a few more home runs than normal for her, and that she has four losses already, as compared to only three all last year. She is also striking out a lot more this year.

But, she isn't getting anywhere near the run support. Her losses:
0-1 Washington
1-2 Tennessee
4-5 Notre Dame (allowed two home runs in relief, got the loss)
3-4 Arizona
1-3 Cal Poly

Oklahome has two wins:
last night---OU 5 Mississippi State 3 Lowary win, Parker save
this afternoon---OU 5 Louisiana Tech 1 Parker win, Lowary save.

Mendes and Clifton had home runs today. UAB next in about twenty minutes.

OU 5 UAB 2
OU is stuck on five runs this weekend. Scored five in every game. Mendes started and went three. Struck out the side in the first. Left the game leading 5-1, after she also hit a two-run home run, her second home run of the day. Parker pitched the last four innings and got the win.

Mendes may be the new star that we need. She is now hitting a team-leading 455. Hit two home runs today. Romero and Clifton each had one. Shay had three doubles that almost went out. Hit the top of the wall twice.
