I read here every few days or so. I used to read every day. It is getting harder. I cam today to check out a few threads, and I have seen several people bashing players. Saying that doolittle isn't good and shouldn't play. When he has been away from the team for 4 months? He has had 4 games back? There needs to be a little patience with him. He is a really good player, and he brings a ton to this team.
My main concern is saying that lazenby needs to leave and that hopefully him and shepherd find other places. Lazenby plays in league play. No, he may not score a ton, but he does things that other players don't. He takes charges, and tries to regularly. He is an energy guy. Plays tough defense. Not everyone can be a star. you need role players. you need guys like lazenby. Hard workers. I don't understand wanting kids to move on from their dream school. If i was Lazenby, and my dream school offered, I would ride that wave!I hope he stays. I love the kid.

I have no problem with saying a kid shouldn't play. Part of the fun of a message board is debating what we would do if we were the coach, and that includes minutes and rotations.

That being said, I agree that I don't like the insinuation that players should be "processed." It's not the right way to do things. If a kid is doing what he is supposed to off the court and in practice, he should have that scholarship as long as he wants.

Totally agree, every member of the team contributes. People need to understand that having too many players thinking they should start does not benefit the team.

Lazenby’s minutes in conference play have gone...
6, 6, 0, 2, 2, 1, 0, 0

I agree with Kruger.

I'm as much of a cheer for the "team guy" as anyone, and yes we need "glue" guys etc....but his minutes are what they should be.

With that said...OU is a top 20 D1 bball program. A scholarship is worth 30K a year (I'm guessing). I've got not prob with Lazenby, I'm sure he knew his minutes would be extremely limited.

OU is NOT a "feel" good school. If he wants to ride it out so be it. Scholarships are year to year deals...for EVERY player so if either party sees something different then it's up to them to make a move.

The Power 5 conference now require 4 year scholarships for athletes. Been that way for about 3 years. I think the seniors and redshirt seniors that were already on a 1 year scholarship are still on a 1 year scholarship as the change to 4 year offers was not made retroactive to include those players already on scholarship.

Big 12 announces new scholarship rules
By Baylor Lariat - December 1, 2014

The Big 12 conference is instituting a series of new conference bylaws to increase future scholarship compensation for student-athletes, the conference announced on Monday.

Pending expected changes in NCAA rules this January, the changes that have been approved will allow schools to increase compensation, sign players to multi-year scholarships for duration of eligibility and let former athletes return to school and complete degree requirements.

“Enacting these measures is an important step in the process of implementing a twenty-first century model that is responsive to the need of our student-athletes,” Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said in a statement.

Previously, athletic aid contained tuition and fees, room and board and textbooks. However, cost of attendance would increase compensation to include “other expenses reasonably related to attendance at the institution.”

“We’ve been very supportive of all three of these initiatives,” Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw said. “Going to full cost of attendance for our student-athletes is something we think is the right thing to do. It has great universal support.”

In addition, scholarships are currently given out on a year-to-year basis. In the new system, schools can now offer scholarships that will cover four seasons of eligibility, meaning institutions would be guaranteeing athletes the opportunity to graduate.

The third bylaw is also intended to push student-athletes toward graduation. For example, in the case of a student-athlete like former Baylor basketball star Isaiah Austin, who lost his chance at the NBA due to health issues, universities can now give former student-athletes scholarships to return and finish their degree plans.

The other Power Five conferences (Southeastern, Pac-12, Big 10 and Atlantic Coast) have also recommended similar changes. However, the Big 12 is the first to write bylaws requiring member schools to abide.

“Being a high-visibility conference, the Big 12 wanted to be at the forefront,” Big 12 associated commissioner Bob Burda said. “The conference had a clear directive to enhance the student-athlete experience, and we feel we have done that.”

The new rules are dependent on a vote during a meeting of the autonomous Power Five conferences in January. The Power Five captured a major victory in August when the NCAA Division I Board of Directors passed a new model allowing the conferences to autonomously create certain rules for themselves.

The three bylaw changes were approved unanimously by the 10 Big 12 member institutions. They will go into effect Aug. 1, 2015, in time for the 2015-16 academic year.

Conference rules or no rules, it's not Kruger's style to process a player if he is abiding with internal rules and is a good teammate. Guys like Grandstaff and Booker broke internal rules.

Good practice players and being a good teammate matter more to me than how many minutes a player gets in games. I've played on teams with really good players who were toxic off the court. That tears a team apart. I've also played with not so good players who were loved and respected by everyone on the team.... even though they never saw playing time. It matters.

No doubt about it, the current Big 12 Conference rules could have been written by Lon Kruger. I like that about him! As much as I would like to see a scholarship open up sometimes when we need a better player, I would not want to do it by kicking a derserving reserve and practice player out the door.

exactly. While I understand that a scholarship is yearly commitment ... I have never agreed with that approach. Those parents entrusted their kid to our university and showing someone the door like that is just greasy. OU should be about its' word and I respect the heck out of coach Lon for that.

We have 2-3 players on this team that either need to step up or get processed. Hate that because I do like everyone on this team, but a few of these guys aren’t playing near the level that they should be. If you fail over and over at your job you get fired. Coaches job is to win games and if you have guys not helping you do that they better go.

Did Booker really get in trouble?

I just kind of figured he saw he’d never start here

Lack of attention to attending class, as I recall. Maybe someone else can expand on that .
