Something interesting

Bay if that is true, then they weren't as good as billed as recruits. What your saying is their talent level and will to win isn't good enough given their experience. At least that's what you seem to be saying to me.

I think it's a talent level AND a lack of will thing. As I've said before, it seems some of them may be tuning out or have quit fighting except for 10 minutes a game and even that's not always true. I don't think that's universal to every player, but I think it might be to some.

Pretty much. Player's that have that "it" are going to give it their all on a very consistent level. They have a high basketball IQ and have worked hard (gym rat types...those that played pick up games against the guys growing up) to improve fundamental skills and ability.

Basketball is a game of match-ups so they will appear to play better depending on the competition and their match-ups. But they are who they are game in and game out...inconsistent, spotty, they are really on or really off, but their skill level is what it is.

When recruits are signed, they have to do the press/media thing and promote the program. They are not about to say, "We did the best we could...they are not game changers or immediate impact players, but we are going to work our butts off and see what we come up with!"

Take this for what it is worth:

A friend of mine who is a former college coach told me the following regarding girls basketball recruiting in Texas:

- there is a certain Texas AAU team (one of the few big ones in Texas so you can connect the dots) whose head coach charges 10k to "work" at a college's camp in order for a school to have a legit shot to land one of his kids

- I was legitamitely surprised that this was going on in the girls game

- OU doesn't have camps so you can draw the conclusion that Coach Coale isn't playing that game.

- The current low level coach who told my buddy about this said that Littel at OSU also refuses to pay the AAU coach

Pretty interesting...wonder which teams are paying the guy.

So back to the original post- is this legal? And why would any top program have to do this? And it is obvious when you look at clubs in Texas and really what club directors work camps (not many)

This happens at most colleges with most AAU programs. I will say this though, never heard of the number being that high. It's usually no more than $3000.00 and how they get away with it........the coach who gets the girls to the campus will work the camp for the weekend. It's a small loop hole in the system that is being used to gain recruiting advantages. There is nothing illegal being done here because the colleges are paying refs and other people helping that weekend. Colleges actually pay the players to work these camps also, so there's nothing illegal about it but I personally don't like it because of the fact the kids aren't getting any of the money.

If I'm OU or OSU I would consider thinking about doing these camps again just to keep up with the other programs. At the KU camp they had Jade Williams, Charlie Collier, Lexi Gordon, and Jonah Johnson just to name a few. UConn do not have to do any camps just because of who they are so everyone can't do the things they do

If AAU coaches are recommending that their players attend certain schools based on what school pays them to get their kids to their camps, it is absolutely illegal.

The cesspool that men's recruiting has become is leaking over to the women's game, unfortunately. Below are just a few links to articles about problems in the men's game.

OSU puts on a really good camp from what I hear. I wish OU would do the camps again but that has been discussed on here many times.

It's not illegal for an AAU coach to suggest which college camp he wants kids to attend. At the end of the day the coach is being paid for working the camp but I do think it's pushing the limit. Until the ncaa come out and say you can't pay individuals to work these camps, it will never be illegal. They aren't paying these coaches no more than they would pay you or I to do the camp.

No, I think you are wrong. The original poster said they paid an AAU coach 10grand to do a camp. I don't think you or I could get anywhere near that money.

Not saying the poster is not telling the truth but I am saying that the coach is exaggerating a little bit. I actually know of the guy he's talking about, and the funny thing is he once coached with him in college. The AAU coach doesn't like the guy because the AAU coach was asked to resign by the college coach. The college coach is now recruiting two of his kids and you can only guess how that's going.

Now let me say this the AAU coach may have bumped the asking price to a ridiculous number because he didn't want to go down there. I could see the number being high because of that.......but the going rate for anyone to work is between $1500-$3000

The original post said nothing about suggesting which camps to attend. He said if you don't pay the AAU coach, you don't have a "legitimate" chance at signing the kid to play college ball at your school. Lots of difference between going to a camp and signing with a school.

My response was not to the original post. Go back and look at who I was responding to. Thank you
