Sooner Trivia

Here's another hint. Following the heroic feat, this former Sooner great was named Man-of-the-Year by National Geographic and invited to the White House. His efforts also prompted a children’s book, “Saving Dr. Spock.”

How about Clifford Ray?

You got it! Clifford Ray played in the NBA for 10 years and is still a respected big-man coach. I love this description of his blue-collar skill set:

Ray’s understanding of what it takes to achieve greatness as a big man comes from his own experiences manning the middle as a 6-foot-9 starting center. Lacking a consistent outside jump shot, he relied on guile and hustle to beat his opponent on a nightly basis.

“I was a great athlete – I ran a 10-flat 100 (meter sprint) – but I didn’t have great shooting skills,” says the Union, S.C. native. “But what I could do, I dominated at it. I was a tenacious defender, a great rebounder, a great team-player and a great pick-setter – I’d get Rick Barry open any time he needed someone to get him open.”

Placing a premium on boxing out and cleaning the glass, of the 213 players in NBA history to record at least 5,000 points and 5,000 rebounds, Ray is one of only 18 to average more boards (8.9) than points (7.4) over the course of his career.

Here's 3 links so that you can get to know him a little better.

The 2nd link shows some pictures of him saving the dolphin and is more about that feat.

The final link is a 3-minute video interview with Ray regarding the dolphin incident.

I was thinking that surely they had put the dolphin under while Ray went to work, but it sounds from that video report as if they didn't, as Ray talks about how calm that dolphin remained during the procedure.

Perhaps the dolphin was sedated but not totally out. But either way, amazing story.

Very interesting. Never heard about this story...

Yes I do. Of the players who have made at least 150 3 point attempts at OU, who has the highest 3 point shooting percentage?
Quannas White.

Q: Wayman Tisdale & Stacey King own the top 4 seasons at OU in terms of total points scored in a year. Who has #5?

I'll go with Ryan Minor...though I like the Harvey Grant choice as well since the '88 OU team played more games than the '95 squad.

That is incorrect. Quannas made only 81 3 pointers while at OU.
My bad. For some reason, my brain transposed "made" with "attempted."

P.S.: I cheated & looked up the right answer (won't spill the beans because I did so). That is one heck of a good trivia question. Kudos.

Thanks. And the answer is not Brent Price.
