Sooners seek happy medium on defense | Tulsa World

OU is not the only team struggling to adjust to the way games are being called now. Last night's MSU-UK game was downright funny at times. Randle's bewildered look after he was called for a foul was priceless. And, he wasn't the only player with a shocked look on his face.

The emphasis on eliminating hand checking and arm bars has changed the way the game is being played, too. Teams with guards and wings who can score off of the dribble are a lot harder to defend now. That helps OU. The question is, can our players make the adjustment and play good defense without getting in foul trouble?

Not that they weren't highly coveted previously, but the new rules make it even more imperative to have rim protectors. So much harder to stop dribble penetration. All the more reason that I love the height we are bringing in next year.

Great point

Agree -- rim protectors will be at a premium. Good point, hadn't thought about it.

Frankly, we haven't played a lick of defense yet. But, I haven't seen anyone play any yet, including the teams we have played. Not blaming our staff, but just believe we are trying to figure out how to play defense under the new rules.

While the arm bar and hand check emphasis is effecting the games, I think the changes in the charge/personal call is really having an effect. For all intent and purposes, every team I have seen, including ours, just lets guys dribble in and shoot layups and seems scared to get near them. It has been fascinating to watch. There have only been a few instances so far where anyone even attempted to get into position to take a charge. Usually, the call had to be made on every dribble penetration, now most times guys are just released to shoot the layup. Again, I can't wait to see how the good coaches adjust to these changes.

I love the new rules. The teams that win will be the teams that can dribble penetrate and score and the teams that notwithstanding the rules, can defend a little.

This is really going to be an interesting year to watch college basketball.
