Sooners vs. UConn - The Evil Empire

Conditioning????
I'm sure that is part of it but looking at the game last night if you notice OU had to work much harder than UConn to find a decent shot. On defense Uconn was making the OU women really cover the entire court

Geno said it all about coaching after the game. Sherri needs to understand - recruiting is where it is at.

Geno on his first years

"I remember thinking that it was going to be really easy, I thought how could it be hard? I was so self assure and so cocky and so full of myself that of course it was going to be easy.....It wasnt until the middle of January that it started to dawn on me and youre not as good as you thought you were and youre only going to be as good as the players you are able to get here. I realized I am pretty good at what I do but it doesnt matter unless you get the players that are really really good"

Only having 9 hurts against a team like UConn. I liked the way they battled.

Fouls hurt as did missed free throws.

The freshmen still rush things.

We just don’t have an answer for when Vivi tires or is in foul trouble.

I was surprise Geno still had his starters in the game late when he was up 35 points or so. Pretty sure he wasn’t happy with the way they played. A lot of that had to do with our intensity.

I liked how they played too but OU only having 9 when UConn was only playing 6 should not be an issue.

Well for starters EJ doesn’t have experience, that’s what I’ve been saying she has potential, but doesn’t get enough minutes... Sherri could play her and ViVi together for a few minutes here and there...

At one time OU had Ej, Simpson, and Shay on the court, I was thinking who’s going to Score.

At 4:49 of the third quarter, fatigue was not a problem for OU. It was Geno who called a time out to settle his team down.

But, the events of the next four minutes sucked the energy out of us. Several very silly turnovers and some bad shot selection coupled with UConn doing everything right rebuilt their energy and took the wind out of our sails. Had we kept it within five to seven, I suspect that the adrenaline would have kept us energetic.

The team that played the first twenty-five minutes can play with anyone. The team that finished, can't. That is what the freshmen need to have learned in Storrs. A silly turnover or bad shot selection can make a good team look like chumps.

How much thought went into that inbounds pass to let UConn score with two seconds left in the third? You con't relax that much during a game.

I was happy with the game. Most teams have been down to UConn 20-40 points in the 3rd quarter and down 20 by the end of the first half if not 30.

One of Maddie's best games and Ana did well too even though she is still not hitting her treys. Good news is that she keeps trying and she should eventually start hitting them. She is still making too many bad fouls.

Penzo was exposed a bit by UConn's quickness and that will be her challenge moving forward. Pellington seems to be trying too hard to win back her minutes from Penzo. As she is by far the best at penetrating under control she is probably our future at point guard.

Not the best game for UConn and I am not sure why. I try to catch all of their games because they are fun to watch. They don't seem to be as strong as last year even though Dangerfield is a big upgrade over Chou at the point and Stevens a huge upgrade over Natalie Butler. But OU seemed to really get them out of sync for most of the game.

I have upgraded my expectations for this team. Baylor, Texas and West Virginia will be tough and OSU may be the best team in the conference so we have our work cut out for us. But I think we win enough games in conference to make the NCAA again and we could be an even better team by then, particularly if Ana and Pellington continue to develop. I also feel that Simpson is beginning to get aclimated to Div I play.

I thought UConn played a good game. At times, I thought they would never miss a shot. When you look at what they did against us, it compared favorably to what they have done all year, slightly better.

season average/against us
points scored: 87.8/88---right on target
points allowed: 61.7/64---we were slightly better than their average
FG%: 51.9/53.1 ----they were slightly better than normal
3PT %: 40.4/42.3---they were slightly better than normal
Rebound margin: 8.7/9 slightly better than normal
Turnover margin: 2.2/3 slightly better than normal

They have played a tough schedule. But, only two teams have been closer than we were: Notre Dame by nine and UCLA by 18 in LA.

They played a good game, better than average. We just played better than we usually play, especially for the first 26 minutes. For about twenty-six minutes, we may have been the second best team in the nation.

I guess you can look at it anyway you want. I seen it as the game was never in doubt, OU looked a step slower at every position. I really thought the game would be 30-50 point loss so I guess OU played better than I thought they would. Sherri never has been or never will be in the same league as Geno (coaching wise) and OU will never get the talent Uconn can bring in each year. I still say OU will be about the same as in years past, maybe a step backwards. I still believe Sherri has ran her course at OU, doesn't mean I can't watch the team and hope for miracles

I never thought of UConn as the "evil empire." That is more of an appropriate label for Baylor. UConn is more of a soul-less killing machine.

Agreed. I despise everything about Baylor. I watch UConn to see how the game should be played. I have no idea how he teaches that much. There really isn't a comparison to UConn.
