Starters:

C 6-2 Sr Clarissa Ober 10.25 pts, 7.5 reb
F 6-1 Jr Ellie Thompson 12.50 pts, 5.0 reb
F 6-0 Sr Kerri Young 11.50 pts, 4.0 reb
G 6-0 Jr Macy Miller 17.00 pts 6.0 reb, 2.25 assists
G 5-8 Soph Madison Gueber 10.50 pts, 1.5 assist, 1.75 steals

Last year, South Dakota State was 27-7 with these same five starters, all scoring about the same. Miller and Young can kill from three. This year, they are 4-0 with wins over Creighton and at Iowa (66-64).

They are obviously a pretty good team. But I believe we should win handily since we're playing at home. On the other hand, I have been wrong before.

I expect us to have our hands full. The jacks lost to Stanford last year in the second round of the NCAA tournament 65-66 at Stanford. Beat Miami 74-71 in the first round so they are not going to be intimidated playing in Norman.

I'll have my backside in the stands cheering them on as always but expect a more than tough battle. They also return one of their two top subs from 2105.

Well, thanks. Now I'm convinced we're gonna lose. ;)

I do see this game as a challenge. They are good, and they are experienced. I think we have the talent and depth advantages.

Thirteen turnovers by SDS has them behind. Nice half by Maddie, T'Ona, Vivi, EJ. Both teams started slowly. But, now, both are doing well. Miller can shoot.

OU 74 South Dakota State 60

Peyton hit four threes and finished with 17. Vivi had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Maddie was named Player-of-the-Game for her 15 point, 3 rebound, 4 steals, 3 assist, zero turnover night.

Gabbi still struggling from the field. T'Ona came on and had six points with six assists and five boards. She did have four turnovers, but she was a spark that ignited a run that put OU ahead solidly.

It was never close after halftime. A 35-29 lead was extended to 42-29 before they recovered. Then, it was pretty much a matter of coasting. They can score. But, they had 22 turnovers as they had some difficulty handling the ball against quicker players. We had 12.

I always have wondered how a proven shooter, such as Gabbi, can go on a cold streak over multiple games. Mechanics? Mental? Both? You see players go through it all the time.

Shot selection is horrible right now.

At this point of the season, OUr team is as good as they've been in 3 or 4 years IMO. But they should be with all the experience. They haven't let cold spells bother them, they are playing good defense, they are changing up defenses during the game which really helps and they seem much better on turnovers. I know they had 17, I think, the last home game, but 6 of those came on offensive fouls. They've been much more consistent all around too. The one real semi-negative to me is shooting...I just don't understand why they are having such trouble hitting shots. They are getting good shots but just not hitting them. They were decent hitting 3's tonight though. They will be ready for conference with this schedule though. SDSU is a good team and I think they would have lost to this team last year.

One huge surprise for me is play of EJ! She has really worked in the off season and is probably the most improved from last year. If her basketball skills get to where they match her level of athleticism, look out! Nancy is learning but you can see she has lots of upside and will be a force if she continues to work hard. Anxious to see Morgan as well.

Some of the shots that they are missing are not as good as what they would want us to believe. Especially early in the game, some of the shots are "open," but the shooter is not in a position to shoot. They aren't squared up, or they are drifting to one side or the other. If they are set in a position and receive a pass, they are much more likely to execute the shot properly. But, you don't hit threes on the run while drifting to one side or the other. How many of these "good" shots are made in motion? They look off from the moment they leave the shooter's hands. Some of the layups are just throw up in the air, and it would be a defiance of the laws of physics if they were to hit the backboard. There are three players who keep throwing up these types of shots.

A very key comment that Sherri made last night was that Maddie was playing at the right speed. That's why she was so good last night. All of her shots last night had a chance. All of her passes had a chance. All of her moves were likely to be successful because they were all under control.

Right now, Gabbi is shooting out of control. Her shots, whether threes or layups, have almost no chance. She needs to operate at the right speed. Peyton has been more at the right speed during the past two games. What is remarkable is that two inexperienced players, in comparison, EJ and Vivi, seem to have an inherent ability to play at the right speed. They rarely get into the trap of taking bad shots.

Nancy is getting some spot playing time and from the stats it looks like she has blocked at least 1 shot in every game. What are the prospects for her going forward?

If SDSU is as good a team as most people believe, then OU would have to be classified as really good. The Sooners, at least in spurts, dominated their opponent last night.

OU obviously will have to keep improving to have any kind of chance of competing for the Big 12 title. But Sherri has the pieces to at least give it a shot. With so many capable players, Coale has many options at her disposal and should be able get the right combination on the floor to keep the team competitive in most games.

Re: South Dakota State

I'm impressed with this team's performance against a great SDSU team. This was one of the most complete games I've seen OU play in the past several years. Maddie was simply possessed (in a good way). I love it when a team uses their defense to ignite their offense. They made the game look simple tonight. I'm disappointed in Gioya's lack of composure down the stretch. Maddie, Peyton, Vivi, T'Ona, and EJ were impressive tonight. I look forward to future games like this one.

Re: South Dakota State

When your shoots aren't dropping, then help the team with asst, defense and boards.Let the shots come to you and quit forcing it.
