South Carolina Frontcourt

At some point, she needs to show that she can win with them. She lost her first prize recruit. She seems to win and win, until it counts. Twice to the sweet sixteen, once to round of 32. Has never beaten what you might call a good team in the NCAA tournament.

You need time and talent to win, dawn is now in a position to will the SEC once again with the talent this team will have. Wilson has a chance to be a special player at 6'5 it's cool that she was once a 5'11 guard, she sounds a lot like Anthony Davis... I want to see if she can keep her shot blocking and rebounding up from the perimeter. They will need outside shooting tho and that wasn't a very strong point on there team last year.

I completely agree, Mac. The outside shot must come, and I think some of the freshmen bring that ability. They had a strong recruiting class, with a couple of great guards (and one with New York moxie, if I recall correctly). It should be a great season.

Dawn Staley hasn't been at South Carolina long enough to have truly made her mark. They were a #1 seed this year, so that's a solid step in the right direction. They had no true post players since Bone left until last year. They should be set at all positions, with depth, this year and years to come.

Staley has had six seasons. Coale took OU to the finals in her sixth. Dawn had eight seasons at Temple before that. It's not like Staley is the new kid on the block. She has fourteen to Sherri's eighteen.

It is very hard to go to a school that doesn't have a history of winning and build a top program in a short time. It is also very tough to bring in top 5 players in such a short time. Here is Staley's record at South Carolina:

Code:
                                Overall SEC
2008–2009 South Carolina 10–18 2–12 11th
2009–2010 South Carolina 14–15 7–9 T–7th
2010–2011 South Carolina 18–15 8–8 T–5th WNIT 2nd Round
2011–2012 South Carolina 25–10 10–6 T–4th NCAA Sweet Sixteen
2012–2013 South Carolina 25–8 11–5 T–4th NCAA 2nd Round
2013–2014 South Carolina 29–5 14–2 1st NCAA Sweet Sixteen

I won't be surprised if they start making the final four on a fairly regular basis. With a bit of luck they could win it all in the next 2-3 years.

Shes had more success each season, and now they add Wilson, who from what I've seen could developed in to a Stewie/ Delle Donne type player.

Yep, I hear what you're saying. However, we've been to the Final Four three times. Fantastic! What's next? An actual championship. I'd be willing to bet SC reaches it before we do, based on the growth and progress of its team. We took a huge step back last season, and that's something that hasn't happened for Staley at South Carolina. Thoughts?

When you look around the country, here are a few coaches that are exceeding expectations:

Karen Aston- Texas
Cori Close- UCLA
Dawn Staley- S. Carolina

None of these have won big yet but their recruiting has gone through the roof.

Not sure why but Jeff Walz has really kicked it into gear on the recruiting trail. His teams are usually good but he is taking Louisville to another level in recruiting.

An under-rated coach IMO is Coquese Washington at Penn St. I think she is a coach to watch over the next couple of years.

We did lose ground last year and this year is extremely important for us to get back on track. With Little, Ortiz, Manning, and Sharane, I'm hopeful this team can get back to the Elite Eight.

Even thought I don't want to agree, I have to here. Even if we pull in Cox and Wilson to go with Dungee, the kids at South Car will be juniors, and Coates will be a senior.

From what I have seen of SC, I don't know that SC will ever reach the Final Four. They don't have that element that I see in teams that do make the Final Four. Notre Dame, UConn, and Stanford have the flow. Sometimes, Louisville and OU have the flow. Tennessee may have lost that flow. Baylor gets it when they have really good talent that fits. I haven't seen SC look like any of these teams when they are good. I've never seen an SC team that I thought would come wthin twenty of either UConn or Notre Dame.

Sherri may have coached one of the top three or four teams in history in 2002. UConn still says that was their best team, and we were competitive. We probably should have won in CP's freshman year. A freakish game by Stanford's center, by far the best of her career, beat a team that should have won instead of Maryland. We didn't actually fit together that well that year. I rather hope that Sherri can find a fit in this young group.

We have a coach who went to the Final Four before there were "elite players."

Syb,
that's not being fair.
Stacy Dales was/is elite.
And Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Swin Cash are certainly elite players in their own right.
Uconn just had three versus OU's one.

Dales was certainly an elite player at OU and could have played on just about any team in the country. While she was our only elite player at the time, women's basketball has changed dramatically in the last decade. There are more really good players now than in 2002. They are bigger, more athletic, and really skilled. It is not possible today to get to the championship game with just one elite player. The reason Geno has the best teams...he has more elite players than anyone else. Of course, his ability to develop players doesn't hurt either.

Obviously
CP was elite
DRob was elite
Hand pre knee injuries was going to be elite
AT was elite
players like
Dionnah Jackson
Nyeshia Stevenson
just short of elite.

Current roster
Ortiz is the best bet.
Little is next.
Kornet next
Manning after that. Injuries being the biggest question.
Sharane is very good player.
The major concern is that all these players are wings/guards.

Was she elite, or was she made elite? Sherri has the ability to use "lesser" players to form a team that competes with teams of elite players. What about Staley says she can do that? Has she delivered with her elite recruits yet?

It's not like this was her first job. She's had as much time at SC as Sherri did as a college coach when we went to the finals. She had eight years at Temple to learn what to do. Seems like her teams underperform.

syb,
I don't think it's one or the other one.
Clearly talent plays a big role.
And clearly development and coaching plays a big role.

And in my opinion. Sherrii's not made a Final Four without at least one Elite player.

Your point on Staley's overall tenure is well made. At this point in her career, with the talent she's recruiting. There are no more excuses. She should be winning SEC titles and competing for Final Four spots.
