Had a guy try to tell me that Stacey signed with UNM out of high school but pulled a no-show. I said twice that Stacey never signed with UNM and went to OU out of high school.
The local "myth" (in Albuquerque) was that King was theirs until OU stole him with the now-famous limo ride from Lawton High. Then-Lobo coach Gary Colson did a pretty good job recruiting King, but it was a no-brainer when Tubbs offered. UNM always had the edge on fan support, but OU's program was better. And, at the time, it wasn't obvious that Stacey and Tisdale weren't going to be teammates on the '85-86 team.
It was also hilarious, back in the day, to read some of the clippings from the local fishwraps (when there were two) in Albuquerque from the King recruitment. One guy strongly implied that Tubbs cheated to get King (the limo trip was what caused this "logic"). That amused me, because the fishwraps loved one of the biggest cheaters in college hoops from the 70's - Norm Ellenberger, and still defend his legacy to this day... :facepalm
