Svoboda to the Portal

I saw this on wbbblog.com that Svoboda was in the portal. That would have us at 14 scholarship players for next year.

She’s been in the portal since at least April 13, right around the time that Keys committed on April 11. I think Jennie probably advised her to enter to free up another spot.

If I were her, I'd want to go somewhere else to get more playing time. If she cares about that aspect of her collegiate time. I think she could be productive for a mid-major, or lower level college, hands down. And, let's be honest, we could use someone that could serve us more, and she's a SC recruit...which says a lot about how badly SC recruited the last few years of her career. Hope we can bring someone in that can contribute immediately!

For a player like Svoboda who only has limited ability to play more minutes at a school likely with a lessor academic standing, that offer fewer degree opportunities and/or a loss of hours for graduation I would not recommend making a possible life changing decision to play a few more minutes basketball for a couple years. It is time to grow up and prepare for the rest of your professional career even if that includes working as a coach.

Of course, if in circumstances where one was extremely unhappy with either/or teammates or coaches and could transfer where she would still have a free full ride scholarship a transfer makes more sense. But those circumstances are the exception not the rule. However, kids will be kids and think playing more basketball minutes the next 2 years is the most important thing in their life for the next 50 years and make decisions accordingly. J.MHO

If someone were extremely unhappy with coaches or teammates, you would think it wouldn’t take them almost a full month after the last game to announce they are leaving.

If you played very limited minutes with little production, would it make more sense to enter the portal as soon as possible to give yourself more time and options to land somewhere new?

I don’t know.

There’s one thing to remember about all the portal announcements we see nowadays; It’s not always the player’s decision.
