I think we can definitively say that travel affected the team's play tonight. Most thought it would.
They still havent left morgantown as of an hour ago... Have you ever stayed on a plane or in the airport for 16 hours... Its not fun and tiring..
Up 3 with the ball, you have to close out on the road. Weather/delays had nothing to do with that.
But they played sluggish and not like the team we normaly see in the first half. If they played like they did in the second half at the start of the game its a 10 point lead for the good guys at the end of the game..
Did we still have a chance to win, yes. But they did not look right in the first half and that had to have something to do with the travel and not getting in a full shoot around.
One play in last night's loss stood out to me more than any other. WVU had the ball when OU was up by three with around 20 seconds left. All we had to do was to get one more stop and it's highly likely our players would have left Morgantown with a win and a smile on their faces.
What bothers me the most is that Harris made a three to tie the game with no one, and I do mean NO ONE close enough to put a hand in his face. The closest defender (I believe it was Buddy) was at least six feet away. Sure, the three was well back of the arc. But when you're up by three points on the road, your first thought as a defender should be to guard the three at all costs to keep the game from going into overtime. It's not like no one knew Harris could shoot from three. He's a 42% shooter from three this season who went 6 of 13 in last night's game.
There are always multiple plays, calls, etc. that could have changed the outcome. But, that one play has continued to haunt me since the game ended with another disappointing loss.
Is that the play where the WV player used the jab step to get open? I though that was Ryan who are guarding him. Or the one where the kid shot if from about 5 feet beyond the 3 point line. Maybe we aren't thinking of the same play. Regardless, if you are defend too aggressively on 3 point shots this year, you are in real danger of sending a guy to the three thow line for 3 shots or even a 4 point play.
I got really tired of the thinly disguised moving screens. In overtime, Tylor set a screen and the guy guarding Tyler shoved him in the back to the point he nearly fell over the guy he was setting the screen on. Should have been a foul.
The shot I referenced is the one when Harris was well back of the three point line at around the 20 seconds mark. I thought Buddy was the defender, but it could have been Ryan or someone else.
I agree that you can't be too aggressive on defending the three this season. The problem I had in that instance is the defender was playing off of Harris at least six to seven feet, maybe more. I'm sure he didn't expect him to take the shot from that far out. But the most important thing in your mind as a defender has to be to guard against a three pointer that could tie the game and send it into overtime if we fail to score again. There had to be a little luck involved on a shot from that distance. But Harris is a terrific shooter who had already proved he can knock it down from long range.
Was in OKC on business last night and took my clients to Toby Keith's because it's THE premier dining destination in the OKC metro, and saw the players there. DJ Bennett pounded at least 8 heavy Belgian ales in a 20 minute span, Cousins was doing body shots off a waitress, and Tyler Neal....Well, I can see where his "White Lightning" nickname came from. That's all I'll say.
Real disappointed in the guys, hope they're not too hungover to play WVU.
It did not impact our ability to come back and take the lead late in the game so I will disagree.
Please tell me you are being sarcastic? Please.
If we get to Morgantown on time, I guarantee we don't even have to make a comeback from down double digits in the 2nd half. Team looked out of sorts and sluggish in the first half.
The shot you reference was in OT where he got the long rebound and nobody was within 8 feet of him.
The game tying shot he was guarded by Spangler who fell for the drop step like Harris was going to drive to the hoop and then wasn't in a position to get a hand in Harris face. As bad as Harris was with the ball prior to that, Ryan made a huge mistake falling for the drop step, not to mention he would have only gotten a 2 and we are still ahead by 1. I'm sure exhaustion had something to do with Ryan's play on that play.
I figured calling Toby Keith's the premier dining destination in the OKC metro would be a dead giveaway.![]()
