Terry Evans after loss tonight

Being that Terry Evans was my favorite player growing up, I would love for him to coach OU. Fans would come out of the woodwork to watch him coach here.

I don't follow UCO at all but I am wondering why most seem to think he is not ready to coach D-1?

Because they want drunkin Gillespie or some fat guy named Buzz.

Our fans would drive BCG to drinking again and I don't think OU needs to deal with that mess.

I dont think people question whether he can coach D-1 ball, i think they question whether he can come in and coach a Major Division 1 team like OU right now with limited experience at that level (as an asst)...

I think he has done everything to prove he can coach and should get a shot at a mid-major type of school...but in no way do i think he is ready for a job like OU...that just takes time to develop, and you cant get that at a place like UCO in its current state...

I'm not sure if there is a precedent of this type of move...a coach with mainly D2 experience going to a top 10 program (tradition and results over the past 30 yrs)...

We saw first hand the struggles a guy like Capel had who coached Division 1 for a limited amount of time before taking over this type of monster...i dont think that would bode well for Evans taking over with no Division 1 experience...

He is speaking truth...UCO is moving in this direction, one of the reasons for the move to the new conference next year...

Obvious they would be in the NCAA 1 AA or whatever it is called now, something sub division...but the basketball team would be eligible for the tourney considering they joined a conference and didnt go independent...

This is still a good 5-10 yrs away though, so it is unlikely Evans would still be there...unless that is his goal...

Edmond Sooner,

The conference UCO is moving to is another DII league. They just wanted to get away from the Texas schools. I have degrees from both UCO and OU so I am not belittling UCO, but in my estimation there is no chance they are ever DI in any sport. There just isn't the interest or resources to accomplish that. What would be the point?

I agree, it is in OU's best interest to try and avoid and experiment hire like Evans would be, with everything that is going on. The risk factor would be to high to go with him, but he does fit some of the criteria that the program could use right now from the head coach.

What I like about Terry is his knowledge of the area and love of our program. You're starting to see lots of stuff pop up now talking about how Jeff was a fish out of water here in Oklahoma, and I think Terry has enough contacts in the area to mend some of the recruiting ties that were broken around here under Capel.

I know it is another D2 league...they are moving because of the added competition as well as the logistics...this is in a move to help save money and prepare for the step up...

Once they do accomplish this move they will have the opportunity to play 1 or 2 football games a year at opposing Major schools campuses and bring in more money than they make a whole year currently...I know Basketball would follow but i'm not sure about all the other sports...

It is still a rough draft, but like i said...these moves are for that reason...it will be 5-10 yrs before anything is done...possibly longer...

No doubt, that is the positive under Evans and i chose not to add that to my comment because even with his contacts it is still a large move from a school like UCO...

I think he could work out, i just dont think a school like OU will have the patience for it too...

I love Evans but it's too much of a gamble at this time. You don't see a lot of major programs hiring head coaches out of the DII ranks and there is a reason for that. I'd love to have him as an assistant at OU and as a coach someday if he got more experience as a head coach or big time assistant at the D1 level. I just don't think we are in a position to take a big gamble with this hire given where the program is at the moment.

I agree.

I will also add that Terry is 1 year older than me, so I remember when he played high school ball at Millwood. When OU recruited him, my dad and many others questioned why a big school like OU, who was just coming off a trip to the NC game would recruit a small PG from 3A Millwood.

Those of you who were following OU basketball back then remember how good he was as a player. How many 3's did he make vs UNLV in December of 89 in Norman to carry us to a victory over Grandmama and #1 UNLV?

My dad used to say the only reason OU recruited him is because his dad played at OU (Eddie Evans).

I think people have questioned him all of his life and I think he has a chip on his shoulder to prove people wrong. This combined with what others have stated about him are why I would be very excited to have him as our coach. Sure, I would like to see a few others offered before they go after Terry, but I think he would fabulous and he would stay forever.

Agree with BoB, nice post.

Also agree.

Here is my biggest knock on Capel, while he said the right things, he just wasn't "passionate" about OU Basketball...at least not to me. Sure he wanted to win, but there was just something missing. With Tubbs you could just tell that he loved what he created and loved being at OU [until he didn't, and then he moved on], same with Sampson, I think he was passionate about winning, and you could tell that the chip on his shoulder was oSu and the mistreatment by the media of our program. As much as I think he loved OU, he HATED oSu and our other rivals. But again, passionate nonetheless.

As to Evans, honestly he'd be in my Top 5 right now. Hate to draw the comparison, but he is a hire that would be very similar to Gundy at oSu in football. They are not OU good, and probably never will be, but they have improved, and I think that is because the guy is passionate about oSu football and can recruit to that passion and can coach to that passion. Evans has HC experience and has done well, unlike Jeff and numerous other coach's around the country, he did not come in to this world with connections in the coaching community. He's paid his dues, and has done a good job wherever he has been. I'd like to think he at least gets an interview.

I agree. At least give him an interview.

I'd like to see Terry get the shot over any of the other candidates I have heard mentioned that I would consider realistic.

Definitely like the thought of Terry over Buzz Williams (who befuddles me as why he is the hot name when Marquette has gotten worse as a program under his leadership) or Gregg Marshall (who has done the same thing to Wichita State).

There isn't anyone who will try harder to be successful here and want to stay forever that I can think of. I think he has proven he is a good Xs and Os guy at UCO.

If we're going to take a leap off a cliff with this hire we might as well do it with someone who is going to enjoy jumping with us.
