Texas at OU

The key stat: Points in the paint
Texas 22
OU 24
Texas has averaged winning this stat by 18. Taking it away from them was key.

I think Sherri mentioned this. She also mentioned that she thought Maddie could drive the lane on them. That is the reason she turned the game over to Maddie at the end. I'm surprised that Maddie had that much staying power.

I noticed Maddie was gassed at the end......But she was fighting til the end!

They subbed Maddie in at 13:15, and she played the rest of the game. Sherri did mention that we had some young people on the court at the end of the game: Derica, Peyton, Maddie, Gabbi, and Sharane.

Really, really well done tonight. Loved the intensity, effort and attitude we played with.
Pretty outstanding team effort against the #4 team in the country. As the players and coaches have said all along, when this team plays together, great things happen.

Great win tonight … looking forward to continuing the journey at TCU on Saturday!

I think it is clear that Maddie is officially over her injuries. She said back in the summer that she was 100% physically. Tonight she proved it. Hope tonight was just the beginning of many more great games for her.

I can't wait until she is the player we were all waiting for. She's just one of those girls that just looks like a ball player. Once she starts mixing in some shots with that ball handling and passing who knows.

I was worried in the first half. They were pounding the ball inside for layups.

I think they outrebounded us, 48-46. They had more turnovers, 15-14.

I had commented that I would like to see Gioya and Maddie on the court at the same time. But, I noticed that Sherri subbed Maddie in for Gioya in the second half, same role.

Something I was thinking tonight, who do you sit to have Maddie and Gioya on the floor together? Maybe give some rest to Gabbi and Peyton?

Great win. Starters really good. Maddie really led team-more mental than physical but she is getting healthier as the year progresses. Bench should have been Player of the Game. 12 players played and all contributed in their own way. Only 15 turn overs, 5 in second half even though Texas took chances with the full court press-that is part of the reason we had the advantage in fast break and in the paint points. We struggled against press, but hopefully will learn to pass-pass-pass and not wait for double team.
Also shot over 80% from free throw line.
Kaykay, Gioya, Sharane had too many fouls; Peyton, Gabbi, and subs took an 8 pt deficit into a 3 point lead late in the first half.
We are still young and might still have a stinker game or two, but we are getting better.

For now, I think Maddie is the first person off the bench. I hate to see Kornet lose that position, but she will do OK. The advantage is that Maddie can come in and sub for Gabbi, Sharane, Gioya, or Peyton. She may end up at post in a pinch. Kornet has more difficulty out front.

Another really stupid foul that was missed was Nneka falling on top of Kornet on a rebound. How was that not a foul? She pushed her back to get the rebound, falling on top of her.

So, they named Maddie as the player of the game. She was the one that saved us when we ran dry, pulling us out of those Texas runs. .

I had thought they would give it to Peyton or maybe Ortiz, but Maddie had a great game. Glad that award can be fairly passed around.

Peyton had a great game. I think the commentators were really impressed when Maddie took over the team when she came into the game. Things happened.

Peyton had some key plays and a lot of rebounds, double-double. Could have been a co-Player of the game. But, I think they were looking at who was taking charge of the team to keep Texas at bay.

Very good win.

Maddie a big difference maker along with Little. Ortiz maybe the best game of the season. Did well against Texas pressure. I thought we handled the press well considering how wild it got at times.

Sharane beginning to look like Sharane but she is so small against those big trees. Helps with Maddie or Kornet in the game as they both help on the boards.

Carter brilliant on offense. Too many fouls trying to do too much. KayKay good on fouling most of the game but a couple of bad ones. ViVi very strong in backing her up. she lacks finesse in her offensive game but could be really strong in time. she makes a difference in the middle and plays pretty smart.

I expected us to be about 2-2 now. Great to be 4-0.

Well, we won by 11, Texas scored 59 points, and only outrebounded us by 2.... I guess that crazy idea by Sherry to guard Texas on the perimeter was a huge mistake! Lol! Texas only looked completely out of rhythm all night...just think if our coach knew what she was doing! We could have beat the #4 team by 30!

How many 3 pt shooters does Texas have?

I thought Sherri nailed it in the post game. She talked about instead of having two or three players that give you 18 points a piece each night, we have nine or ten kids that can all give you ten to twelve points a night. Great shooters. The three things that really impressed me tonight, this is the fifth game in a row that the Sooners have played tough "mad dog" defense. Every girl strapped it on and challenged their assignment. I thought that Sherri just out coached Aston tonight. With as big of a front line that the horns have, I thought Lang and Stafford could have had a field day. Just excellent team defense all around in preventing very many easy baskets. And Maddie Manning. She was my MVP tonight. Finally getting comfortable on the court again, doing the things she is accustomed to doing. She, for the moment, has earned the first or second off the bench. Her bounce pass off the dribble to Vivi on the low post was just a thing of beauty, she was in a "zone" tonight.

The girls are beginning to trust each other more every game. They are better as a team, than a bunch of individuals. They still have things to work on. Breaking the press, pump fakes, and concentrate on the glass. Once Texas got up by 8, I don't know if last years team could have grineded out defensive stops, and taken the lead back. Maybe they could. These kids have a toughness, and iron will about them. I am looking forward to Saturday and see them against a good TCU team, hopefully keeping us unblemished in the Big XII.

Given our free throw shooting woes early this year, it is interesting that OU has the: (in conference play)
1. Sharane 923
6. Maddie 813
8. Peyton 762
11, Gioya 647

I hope, but doubt, that this was the break-out game for Maddie. I think it will take a bit of time to be consistent. But, this is just a part of what she can do.

One of my favorite men's players of all time was Quannas White. He wasn't the star of the team. But, I thought he was the backbone of the team that went to the final four. I thought he was the drill sergeant, but he was more like the combat veteran that said, "bring it on." That is the demeanor that I have seen in Maddie. When they are playing as tough as they did tonight, I think Maddie will stand out. It's her game.

It helps everyone to know that this game does not depend on them. They can play their best. If they aren't having their best game, someone else will. If it is an off night for Gioya, Maddie can fill the role. If Kay Kay has problems, Vivi or McKenna can play. There is someone that can fill your role tonight. That frees up everyone to fight just a bit.

Sherri brought up a point. Maddie (and Peyton) do things that don't show up in the box. How many times did each tip the ball tonight. They didn't get credit for the steal or rebound. But, they made sure that it ended up in OU's hands. Be about keeping the ball in play.

Brady Sanders and Jones can hit the three.

Finally decided to get the video for a month but not impressed. Love looking at empty court while players are at the other end. Also, why was there no audio with the video? Is that usual? no play by play? I do not know if the audio subscription was working DURING the game but I could not get it after the game started. Was it on during the game or if it was, can you only play one on your acount at a time.....an either or, audio or video? Anyway, tried listening to kokc radio with the game but the radio was ahead of the video (when my video worked at all), so that was difficult.

The game was billed as "second screen". When the game is televised, I think they are restricted in what they can do online. There was no play-by-play with the online video. I was watching it for awhile, but I didn't want to pause the TV so that they could be synchronized.

I've had the online video for several years now. It was horrible when CBS Sports was running it. I like it a lot now. Of course I follow quite a few on the OU sports, so that makes a difference.

What a gritty, determined win. I haven't seen that out of an OU team in a long, long time. Perhaps since Dales.

It was a complete win. These last five games have been the absolute most complete and best defense I have ever seen the Sooners play. I love it.

The girls rebounded their butts off. I haven't seen the stats, but I thought, given the UT frontline, that we did an excellent on the boards.

Maddie, Vivi, Peyton...WOW! Just the entire team.

Defense made the Horns shoot so poorly.

Maddie was just money tonight, as others have said. I was so happy for her. No one deserves tonight more than she does.

Sherri subbed perfectly. Called plays and defense perfectly. She had UT guessing what they would face every time down the court.

I don't think any of us ever thought this would happen after that preseason.

Can't wait to the next game. The difference between this squad and last year's is just unbelievable.

Just looked at the stats. Rebounds, we barely got beat.

We held Texas to less than 27% from the floor. We shot under 38%.

If anyone says defense wasn't what this game was all about, they are crazy!

"Red River Upset" - what a great headline to wake up to! I said after the first game this was going to be a fun team to watch. Really proud of them and looking forward to an exciting rest of the season.
