I've never been to their current facility, but found this interesting:

3. Texas is exploring the idea of looking “down the road” for an alternative site for a new basketball arena if the location of the Erwin Center and perhaps the Penick-Allison Tennis Center are needed for the university’s new medical school. Texas is even considering a joint-use facility with the city of Austin, and men’s athletic director DeLoss Dodds said the school is checking out new arenas at Louisville and Nebraska and in New York. “I think it’s likely” that a replacement arena will be needed, Dodds told me. “No decision has been made, no timetable set.”

Not surprised. Not a very good basketball arena at all IMO. Kinda like a certain place I'm more familiar with...

The shared facility is the way to go and I am sure they will end up going that route.

I don't see where Texas would build this thing. There are some parking lots downtown but I don't think they are big enough for an Arena / event center.

my first thought was round rock, but that is something a pro team would do, not a college. you would think they would want it close to campus

the problem with Round Rock is that it is very inconvient for a large amount for a lot of Austin. I live in Lakeway. I don't want to go to Round Rock for a game. The people in the Eanes ISD, South Austin, and even Central Austin probably don't want to go to Round Rock.

If I were making this decision, I would build the Medical School in Round Rock or Kyel/Buda and build a new arena where the Irwin Center is. You would have to figure out where you play for a season or two but the Irwin Center is a good location other than parking.
