Texas: Rio Grand Valley

That was impressive.

I take bk everything I said about TT over the weekend she can be a game changer.
Gabbi played great as well, just doesn't have TTs speed. What a great bench player though.

Dungee- is gonna be good, and Sherri is using her to push everybody to another level. I noticed for the technicals that Maddie and I believe Peyton were on the court and she had Dungee shoot them when Maddie and Peyton shoot like, 90%. That was 100% message time. I really like her.

Mulkey-- I think we got a player here. Potential Game Changer. The player we've been needing for a long time to compete on a national level.

Maddie- what I hope is that Sherri doesn't give her that spot bk until she is able to score 18 a game. She is beyond capable of that- SO dynamic. But she needs to be forced to that level. Like Geno did to Stewart, just use Dungee to twist that knife on her and don't stop until she knows it

Vivi- beast.

Gioya and Peyton were the benefactors of some silent messages tonight. Worth noting Dungee is having more consistent touches than Gioya right now and they are extremely similar players. Also, I don't think Dungee shuts other players down by hanging on the ball too long, she makes open passes- and hasn't forced too often. She will push Gioya to be more of that type of player- quick decisions or Gioya might become the sixth- which on this team ain't really a bad gig at all- also very necessary to have one. I think Maddie definitely gets a spot in the 5 because of D- and she also looks way better than last year shooting the ball. We shall see what happens

We look tough- and this Dungee kid is going to be responsible for raising the play of everyone else's game. I'm happy about it. And great game to coach as well- great by everybody. The future looks bright

I pretty much agree. Dungee is the real deal although she has lots to learn and we saw a glimpse of what Mulkey can do as well. Nancy has shown improvement just from the beginning of the year.

I think EJ is my most improved player from last year. I'm really surprised how well she's doing. She's a tremendous athlete but doesn't have that much basketball experience. If she continues to improve and her basketball skills reach that of her athletic ability, look out!

The key for me will be can they duplicate this effort the next game. And then the next game and so on. I've seen these spurts the last couple of years and then they revert back to where they were. Still lots of work to do. Still a mindset issue to me.

4:18 third quarter

It was 49-44, and we had slowly lost an eleven point lead. Sherri called a time out, and Nancy entered with Maddie, LaNesia, Gabbi, and Chelsea. I think Nancy and Maddie scored the next 11 points as we extended that lead to 67-50 in the last 4:18, adding twelve points to the lead. I think Nancy had 9 points, two blocks, two steals, and two rebounds, both of which ended up as putbacks. Maddie scored six, had two rebounds, two steals, tipped two other passes that ended up as steals, and an assist. They just took over with those long arms.

If I remember correctly, Nancy put two of Maddie's misses back in the basket, and Maddie put Nancy's only miss back in the basket.

After they fueled the run, Gabbi hit a three on an assist from Maddie who had an offensive board, and Chelsea and LaNesia took over for a couple of baskets each. TXRGV had a difficult time coming up for air, and Nancy would have blocked their airways.

Gabby had an assist when she tipped a rebound to Nancy and Nancy put it in. It was a nice play by Gabby.

Great second half last night. That 3rd quarter run Syb touched on was indeed fantastic. The defense was very impressive and we overwhelmed them with length, speed and anticipation. Nice to see the higher shooting percentage too. Well-done!
Strong team showing. Hopefully this serves to build our confidence as we close the non-conference and head into Big 12 play.

Great 3rd quarter defense, with a lesson in how to use the 1-3-1 trap press, and Nancy on offense. Good moments from almost everyone, sometime in the game.
Only downer was 16 turnovers, most unforced. Many of the turnovers were bad, thrown without any chance of completing a pass. Vivi with 3, Gioya with 3, Maddie with 5, T'Ona with 2. We have to improve on shooting 3's(or selecting shots) and unforced turnovers to really deserve a top 20 ranking.

Never heard of TRGV before but a win is a win

The 4:18 run (Nancy, Maddie, Chelsea, Gabbi, LaNesia)

With 4:18 left and the lead down to five (49-44), Sherri called a time out and installed the five above.

3:51 Nancy is fouled and hits two free throws, 51-44

3:32 In the middle of a defensive stand, all five OU players touch the floor during a time out in the middle of a possession. There were three times during this possession that the ball was tipped out of bounds, finally resulting in an absurd shot.

3:18 Maddie tips a rebound on a ridiculous shot to LaNesia.

3:11 LaNesia tosses it ahead to Nancy who receives it off balance, stops, waits for everyone to pass her by, and calmly puts it back up and in. 53-44

3:05 Nancy tips a pass, Gabbi gets it and drives to the lane, passing to Maddie who, like Nancy a few seconds before, stops, gathers herself, and calmly puts it in. 55-44 at 2:58

2:45 a wild shot is put up over Nancy,

2:38 LaNesia passes inside to Mulkey on the break, lay up 57-44

2:28 Maddie steals the ball out front and is fouled by Kjartensdottir, her third

2:14 Gabbi passes to Nancy, but it is tipped away, Gabbi grabs it and tosses up to Nancy who lays it in 59-44

2:00 Nancy fouls, they hit two free throws 59-46

1:47 Derica hits a three from the corner 62-46

They hit a shot

1:22 LaNesia hits a jumper on the secondary break 64-48

1:05 Nancy block

0:51.7 Nancy fouls, they hit two free throws 64-50

0:46.3 LaNesia is fouled and hits one of two 65-50

double dribble on TxRGV

0:04.7 Maddie drives the lane for a runner 67-50

In that two-minute run from 4:18 to 2:14, the score went from 49-44 to 59-44

I think they said it was a merger of Pan American and UT-Brownsville.

In addition to Lon, another person with connections to our state coached at Pan AM University. The great Abe Lemons (a true Okie - born in Walters, OK) coached there for 3 years or so after leaving OCU, and before coaching the Texas Longhorns.

He was at Pan Am from 1973 to 1976, and was named Texas Coach of the Year for the 1974-75 season. Interestingly, while there, he coached the nation's leading scorer - Marshall Rogers.

After his time at Pan AM, he took the head coaching position at the University of Texas. Anyone recall that he served as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 1977 and was named National Coach of the Year in 1978?

Fortunately Abe regained his senses, and returned to Oklahoma to complete his career back at Oklahoma City University. I have always loved the great stories about Abe - and his hilarious quotes.

Great info on Abe too. Thank you! I hope Lew can go on to have the same success.

Wasn't Abe Lemons the coach that told one of his player that had all "F's" beside one D- on report card..told him "Son you been spending too much time in that one class"

It was impressive. Best they've played this season. Period!

Bob was a graduate of Putnam City. I played against him in college when he was at Oklahoma Baptist. I played with his former teammate Terry Anderson at Central State (Edmond). 1975-1977. Bob was a tough competitor. One of the best "floppers" I ever played against.
