The Noon Big 12 game.... Phillips 66/Cooper Tires/Etc

I know this doesn’t have anything to do with the game thread, but saw Kingfisher’s Bijan Cortes was in the house.

that makes them playable even if they struggle on O

Recap from Eric Bailey...

Oklahoma’s “never-say-die” attitude was the foundation for another comeback victory Saturday afternoon.

The Sooners rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half to seize a 66-61 win over Kansas State in their Big 12 opener at Lloyd Noble Arena.

OU trailed 44-33 with 14:23 remaining and 61-54 with 3:45 to go, but the Sooners did not panic.

“That’s what the coaches preach: You can turn it around,” said Austin Reaves, who hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:39 remaining. “If it’s a 10-point game, you can turn around a game in three possessions. You can hit three straight 3s. So with the talent we have, we feel we’re in any game.

“We’re going to keep grinding and keep playing every possession like Coach said, like it’s our last. And if something good happens, then that’s what happens.”

Thanks to those of you who defended the team even if they didn't win by 30 points. For what it's worth, I believe big's comments were some of the most mildly offensive.

To the Nancies who are worried that the Sooners play will turn their hair prematurely gray, don't be concerned. Your panties should keep your hair color hidden to all but your very closest friends.

Interesting to read the article and tweets from KSU's beat writer after the game. Long story short, he focused on two decisions Lon made that helped decide the game -- switching to a zone, and, unlike Weber, not benching a key player with four fouls. Apparently the writer got conned and somehow doesn't understand that Lon is simply a caretaker who ensures we have a clean program. If only he realized that Lon just collects a paycheck but isn't really invested in trying to win games!

Going to the zone was a great move by Lon. At the appropriate times in games, I would like to see more of this moving forward.

+1

Postgame Lon said they put it on over the winter break.

Ditto. Unless a team is just lights out playing man, mixing things up is a good move. Of course, like any zone, the keys will be not giving up a lot of open threes, and not giving up too many offensive boards.

with our length you'd think the zone would be a strong choice for this group

Yes, only negative is with the starting 5 there's no shot blocker so it's almost got to be a 3-2 or a 1-2-2. Which isn't a bad thing, it just means you wouldn't be able to run it for too long before the other team gets comfortable with it. Five minute stretches (especially with Alondes and/or Reaves) would be ideal imo.

Yep a 3-2 is much preferable over a 2-3 for this roster. I also wouldn't mind seeing a little bit of token pressure picked up at three-quarters court (not full press) much like Villanova has done over the years. The idea is not so much to create turnovers, but to disrupt the initiating of the offense and bleed some shot clock.

Yeah they've done this in the past for about 2-5 possessions a game. Maybe because there are so many newcomers they haven't installed it?
