It is just the way it goes. I wore black socks because of them and my dad hated it. But, I'm sure there were things about him and his friends that his parents hated. There is a classic story in Mitch Albom's book about them; Ed Hightower hated the whole "Fab Five" thing so much he banned Jalen Rose from smiling during a game.
I think we could trace older generations disapproving of younger ones back to the beginning of this country. I was doing some research for something one time and found a hilarious magazine article in which the pitcher Kid Nichols complained that pitchers "these days" were sissies. "These days" was in 1947. The story is on page 41 here. It is a tour de force of "Get off my lawn" cliches that we hear to this day about modern day ballplayers.
I've vowed not to do that sort of thing myself, but then I see the popularity of Justin Bieber, and...
