Me too Tony. I'm sad that it ended this way for JC; I've always felt he was an outstanding representative of the University. Still, can't say I've been this excited for OUBB since a bit before mid-season.
This isn't meant as a defense of where Capel has taken us, but it needs to be a WOW hire to be worth it.
First, we will likely lose out on any unsigned recruits for next year unless we get a guy that is instantly respected. That means we don't get help at PG and down low like we all know we need right now.
Second, it's a big buyout, and it would have been much less if we had waited a year. Do we have the money to lure the right guy here? Would we have had we waited?
Third, we have been fighting against inexperience for a while now, and bringing in a new coach with a new system will mitigate the fact that we have guys starting to get some experience in a system. Some say Capel didn't have a coherent system, so maybe that's not such a big deal anyway.
If we just fired capel because we are unhappy with where we are at right now, without having a pretty sure plan for who we want and how we'll get him, then that's going to hurt us more than bringing Capel back next year.
What do we need in a HC right now?
1) The ability to motivate mediocre players to achieve the top of their potential. With the talent we have, that's what it will take to compete just to be a bubble team.
2) The ability to run a system that allows mediocre talent to compete with more talented teams by playing solid half-court defense and emphasizing hustle and playing smart.
3) The ability to recruit like a madman to get the talent back up to big12 standard ASAP.
These guys don't grow on trees, so I hope we've got a couple in mind, plus a real plan for how to get one here.
