Newsok.com reporting Jeff Capel firing at OU. In 09, he was one game away from Final Four. Heard it wouldn't happen unless OU had wow hire

Wow can be taken two ways.
"wow, OU hired a big name head coach"
"wow, OU hired some guy from Eastern Popcorn Shore I've never heard of"

Me too Tony. I'm sad that it ended this way for JC; I've always felt he was an outstanding representative of the University. Still, can't say I've been this excited for OUBB since a bit before mid-season.

I would say "wow" would be someone that knows what they are doing. This job was over Capel's head.

This isn't meant as a defense of where Capel has taken us, but it needs to be a WOW hire to be worth it.

First, we will likely lose out on any unsigned recruits for next year unless we get a guy that is instantly respected. That means we don't get help at PG and down low like we all know we need right now.

Second, it's a big buyout, and it would have been much less if we had waited a year. Do we have the money to lure the right guy here? Would we have had we waited?

Third, we have been fighting against inexperience for a while now, and bringing in a new coach with a new system will mitigate the fact that we have guys starting to get some experience in a system. Some say Capel didn't have a coherent system, so maybe that's not such a big deal anyway.

If we just fired capel because we are unhappy with where we are at right now, without having a pretty sure plan for who we want and how we'll get him, then that's going to hurt us more than bringing Capel back next year.

What do we need in a HC right now?

1) The ability to motivate mediocre players to achieve the top of their potential. With the talent we have, that's what it will take to compete just to be a bubble team.

2) The ability to run a system that allows mediocre talent to compete with more talented teams by playing solid half-court defense and emphasizing hustle and playing smart.

3) The ability to recruit like a madman to get the talent back up to big12 standard ASAP.

These guys don't grow on trees, so I hope we've got a couple in mind, plus a real plan for how to get one here.

If there is a "wow" hire, shouldn't we hear about it soon? How soon? Within the week? And if we don't hear about it, does that mean something? There is no hire yet?

Blair is just speculating but his logic/source makes sense; no way Joe C didn't have someone in place prior to making this move

It could be a who the hell is this guy or it could be Coach K.

I email with a member of the KC press community who is also an OU fan. I emailed him last week with the info from Chewy and he emailed me that night after we beat Baylor that he didn't hear anything concrete about the next loss being Capel's last game.

I emailed him this morning with the text of Kerkhoff's tweet and he said he heard the exact same thing at the tourney last week that OU wouldn't make the move unless they had a "wow hire".

So, this makes me feel better that Joe has somebody ready to take the job who is a good coach who has experience running a good basketball program and can get us back to the level we are used to being and maybe improve it.

The only kind if wow he could be speculating on, based upon the context of his statement is that it is a big name.

I do NOT know what the real reason is, but it could have been something else.

It could be that some BIG OU donors threatened to close their wallets if Capel was retained for another year. It could be that these BIG donors made their feelings clearly known in the last few days to the OU administration. IF this is true, then it could be that Joe C. was caught flat-footed and is just now beginning his search for the new coach.

Again, I do NOT know. This is just pure speculation. If Joe does not announce a new hire soon, then there may be something to this speculation.

Anyway, I seriously doubt that Blair Kerkhoff of the KC Star has buddies that really know the inside scoop.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

It was years ago, but I once heard an interview with Joe C. in which he said he has five names of potential coaches for every sport in his desk drawer at all times, just because you never know what might happen and you have to be prepared. He won't be caught flat-footed. He might hire the wrong guy, but he'll have a plan.

How can OU have a "wow" hire lined up? It's tough, or darn near impossible, for Joe to have met with too many names, if any. Even tougher to be far enough into the process to see if the money part would work out. A few of the names, Buzz and the OD coach, are in the NCAA's, they aren't going to be talking.

Joe might have heard that some decent coaches will be interested, but I'd just about guarantee nothing is set in stone at this point.

Even so, the idea that Joe already has a guy ready to take the job may not be correct.

Now, I hope Joe makes the announcement of a new hire later today. But it may take some time, even if Joe has that list in his drawer.
