Thomas, Spangler, Cousins and Hield

If he wants, Spangler has a chance at the NBA. He looks to have the defensive skills to guard a 2 or a 3 player. If so, there's a home for him. Occasionally, he's shown range on his shot and I bet he is better than Andre Roberson at this skill.

Shane Battier had a long career in the NBA. Kyle Singler's in the NBA. Lance Thomas is still playing. All were adequate ball handlers, nothing special. What they had or have was defensive tenacity, good court vision and a nose for the ball.

For Spangler to make it, he needs to work on his three point shot and next year with the possible luxury of three tall interior players Spangler might be allowed to stretch the defense occasionally with outside shooting. I think he could show the abilities to guard wing players.

Wow you are living up to your name with this post SILLY???

Spangler - Unfortunately his athletisicsm isn't up to par. Very solid college player, but he'll be going against 6'10" + players who can jump and are quick. Not sure if he can overcome his limitations.

This is such typical internet fan BS. Spangler is extremely athletic. He could have played QB in D-I. Being white doesn't mean you are not athletic.

This has nothing to do with it.

Who do you think is more athletic...Spangler or Kris Humphries?

Just because you can play QB at the D-1 level, does not make you an NBA athlete.

Spangler's closest NBA comparison could be Nick Collison. But honestly, if Osby isn't in the league than Thomas and Spangler just don't have a chance. Osby can do everything that Thomas and Spangler can, and a lot better.

A better question is who is more athletic, Thomas or Spangler, Lattin or Spangler, and Bennett or Spangler.

If you think race has nothing to do with this opinion, you are nuts. Bookout wasn't a good athlete yet he played two college sports and easily could have played baseball but for time. When you have the ability to play three college sports at OU you are a freak athlete. Tyler Neal wasn't a good athlete, yet the basketball team voted him the best athlete on the team. None of the white guys are ever athletic enough. There is a reason people hold this opinion and it is based on race not reality.

If his athleticism was up to par as it relates to playing basketball then he would then have the opportunity to play basketball in the NBA. If by chance, and it's a good chance, that he does not make it to the NBA, then by all accounts it won't be due to his character, but more likely based on his athletic ability.

Why are you comparing Spangler to other players who will never sniff the NBA?

Do you even know who Kris Humphries is?

This may be said about every guy that doesn't make the NBA yet on this board, I constantly read that the white OU players are not athletic enough. There is a clear bias on this message board about athletic ability and race.

I predict that Cousins will play 1-2 years in the D league and will be a contributor on a NBA roster in 2-3 years.

He's shown solid and consistent growth/development each year he's been here and I believe he will continue that pattern, especially with NBA level coaching.

Because the comment came in a discussion about four college basketball players at OU. No one said, Thomas, Hield or Cousins lacks athletic ability. Furthermore, it is a consistent theme. The white kids are not athletic enough. This was said numerous times bout Neal when the team voted him best athlete. Some went so far as to claim it was a joke.

Being a great athlete and a NBA athlete are two different things. Hitting a baseball requires amazing athletic ability, so does being able to throw a 30 yard spiral on the money. But neither of those things are going to help you in the NBA. Thomas is not close to being an NBA athlete either.

The ones who do make the NBA that are not great NBA athletes do 1 thing great and everything else they tend do well. Spangler rebounds great and hustles, but his other areas don't measure up to NBA status either and I'm not just talking about athletic ability.

I feel like my post is too negative against Spangler (who I would want on every OU team). So I must say I'm just talking about his NBA prospects, I love what he brings to this team and he is one of my favorite OU players of this decade.

Never heard this said about Neal here. In fact, the consensus until he finally put it together his senior year seemed to be that he was nothing but an athlete.

Honestly, over the last 10 years we've barely had any white guys.

Cade Davis
Nick Thompson for 12 games or whatever
Casey Arent
Tyler Neal
and now Spangler

are the only ones I can think of.

Of those guys, Davis was a solid athlete, Thompson and Arent weren't, Neal was an athletic freak, and Spangler is a decent athlete, although nowhere near NBA athleticism.

I beleive Osby gave Spangler credit for helping him become a better rebounder(it was in an article) so no Osby could not do everything Thomas and Spangler can do. Matter of fact, I have personaly heard Kruger say that Ryan is the best rebounder he has had at Oklahoma, so I think part of your statement is misleading when you say Osby can do everything Thomas and Spangler can do, and alot better.

I agree, os, though around here it borders on sacreligious to make such a statement.

+1...that is the reason I like reading this board, there are alot of NBA Coaches and Scouts on here and I guarantee they are always 100% correct with who is getting Drafted(LOL).

Scouts have been quoted saying they think cousins actually has the best chance to SUCCEED in the NBA. Now I'm not saying he will get drafted higher but he will play. He has a great shot and could be an Anyhony Morrow type player. He's a great defender when he wants to be and has great hops. He definitely needs to work on his ball handling.

Hield is a great shooter and with repetition/work could be amazing. He definitely needs to learn to penetrate and make his own shot just to make people stay honest but he will be drafted the highest.

Sorry but Spangler is NOT an NBA guy...he is Kevin bookout made over with a little better rebounding and not nearly as good with post moves. He will do the Cade Davis type "after college playing" over seas. Definitely be one of my favorites.

Thomas is great and if he was 6'11" I would say he has a future. Decent post moves very long...actually has great handles for a big guy and can rebound when he is motivated to do so. Is great at timing his blocks as well. And has a pretty shot out to about 12-15 feet. Put a 6'8" post is so hard to be successful in the league. Osby was the definition of undersized and had a WONDERFUL shot but was just not big enough to play PF and didn't have the handles to play SF. I can see Thomas getting shots but constantly working in the D-league.

Woodard will be a nice towel boy.

Why would you read a message board if you don't want to read other people's opinions? Serious question.

Spangler might not be the best back to the body post player, but he has far from "0 skill". He is shooting almost 60% from the floor. He averages 1 shot from 3 a game. That isn't "moving your game outside". Almost all of his points against tech came from driving to the basket or post moves.

Whheeeew. Was referring to who I commented on when he said at the next level has to develop his jumpshot/3 pointer and guard the 2 or 3.

Not the guy you're asking, but not every opinion is offered as such. Many are instead a sour mix of sneering dismissal, mockery, and arrogant statements of "fact."
