Nice to see that Fran’s willing to give us more credit now that his son’s not on the team, but sheesh, the way both of those guys yammered on and on about Press Virginia throughout the first half (I haven’t watched the second half yet) was so over the top. You’d think no team had ever utilized a press defense before.

I mean, sure, discuss it a little early in the game, for the sake of any viewers who might not be familiar with WVU, but at some point, you’ve gotta move on. Every single defensive stop or offensive miscue gets a, “See there? Look at that! There’s a turnover!”

It's nothing new that broadcasts are "game-planned" in advance and they decide long before the opening tip what they're going to focus on, but it's even worse when they call a WVU game and it just gets so tedious.

Yep, every WV game will have these points made repeatedly:
1) They will press the entire game! (OMFG!)
2) This press is cumulative! You'll be so tired by the end of the game!
4) They are so deep, they come at you in waves!
5) Bob Huggins is mean!
6) Lather, rinse, repeat ad nauseum

Fran said... Jwood wasn't *****footing around on that drive! I just laughed!!

Now that I've seen the whole game, I'm prepared to say: The WVU press that they jabbered about endlessly was a non-factor tonight. Fran kept saying on our in-bounds plays, "That's IF they can even get the ball in..." Well, the Sooners got the ball in and across the half-court line in timely fashion and with relative ease all game long.

Fran also kept saying, "Too much dribbling!" which was almost invariably followed by a nice made shot by us.

I understand why they come in with some things lined up to focus on, but at some point, you've got to drop the talking points and call the game as it's happening -- because it became apparent pretty early in this game that the vaunted press wasn't causing us all that much trouble.

yup, I finally turned the sound off. They couldn't stop talking about how wv was going to go on a run...ou better not get too far down...blah blah blah.

OU handled the press better than anyone WVU has faced yet this year (at least statistically), and we didn't get much credit for that.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet (apologize if it's already been addressed), but OU actually won the turnover battle vs. that vaunted WV press. The 'Eers had 13 turnovers to just 12 for the Sooners. And, only about a half of OU's turnovers were a direct result of the WV press. Several were from bad passes, etc.

can we finally put to rest the love of franchilla? The dude is a terrible commentator

I still like Fran, though agree with the nauseating love affair he had with WVU's press comments. In fairness, I remember he went absolutely nuts when Buddy hit that half-court buzzer shot (or .0001 seconds after the buzzer) against WVU in the Conference Tourney last year. If I was a WVU fan, I'd be thinking "What an OU homer". I guess it's all about perspective. I still think he adds a lot of value.

Fran is right. The WV press is very good. They made almost impossible for us to get the ball in bounds. Best I have seen for some time.

But we did get it in and that is a credit to our team. McGusty deserves a lot of credit. After some early moments of panic our team led by McGusty got the ball over half court and into our offense. That in spite of the constant bumping and slashing by WV, which the officials largely ignored.

I agree. To me, it's pretty obvious he's an OU fan. Yes, some games he goes a little overboard against us to try to offset. But also, like you mentioned, he lets his "OU fan" side burst out some(HAHA). But you can't say some of the insight he brings isn't phenomenal. He does get on tangents about certain things, like a few years ago that stretch 4 for OSU from Dallas that was a burger boy, can't think of his name. Every OSU game one year he went on an on about how he was trying to be a guard and he should just go inside and be who he is or whatever... That grew a little tiresome. But, color guys are going to have tangents, sorry to inform you. What the heck else are they gonna talk about for 2, sometimes 2.5 hours?
