Trae shooting from range

Found the below passage in an ESPN article -- seems relevant given the debate about whether Trae should stop taking extremely long threes. His range is so good that the distance he shoots from rarely bothers me. If he is open and in any sort of rhythm, he needs to let it fly, especially on a good shooting night. Obviously if he is having an off night, picking his spots more carefully is a good idea.

It's rare enough to see someone go to the line 19 times, but what he did from 3-point range was even more unusual. According to NBA Advanced Stats, all six of his made 3-pointers came from beyond 30 feet. If that sounds only mildly absurd, consider this: In the past 20 years, no NBA player has hit six 30-foot shots in a game. Only one, Milwaukee's Mirza Teletovic, has hit four in a game, and only five have made six such shots in an entire season.

I have no problem whatsoever with Trae’s range. I would rather see him take a thirty footer than anyone else on the team, except maybe Manek, take a shot from just behind the line when they’re open. He’s not only more consistent in making those shots, he uses his range effectively to put more pressure on our opponents’ defense. He also knows when to take the deep threes and when to use other weapons at his disposal if his shots aren’t falling.

Don't have stats to back this up, but it seems to me that Trae is deadlier from around 30 feet than he is when he's shooting from just behind the arc.

Anyone have figures on this?

I agree there seems little drop off.

He’s a good shooter (83% FT, 40% 3FG), but what makes his shooting unique is range he carries it at.

i found that passage absurd, and quoted it in another thread.

would merge, but for my pride in coining the term 'outraegous'

I have my concerns when Trae takes a deep 3 in the first 5-7 seconds of the shot clock during the last 1-3 minutes of a tight ball as a first option. I have seen him do it 3-4 times this year and think he should be working for a better shot with 23+ seconds on the shot clock.

He's changing how the college game is being played. Teams don't know how to defend a talent like this. Lon has done a great job with him and how the team plays around/through Trae.

I think sometimes those early shots catch the defense by surprise. They expect the long range shot late in the shot clock, not in the first 5-7 seconds. They might be playing him tight expecting him to drive but not be ready to put a hand in his face on a shot.

A review of the game logs indicates he's only done this twice - and they were both during the overtime in Stillwater.

Spot on. If he takes the shot in rhythm, I'm a little more ok with it. But as you said, we have plenty of time (23+ seconds) to get a better look in most situations.
