Transfer portal bigs

I think the need is there even if Harmon is the lead guard. You always need two guys who you feel comfortable with in that role, because Harmon isn't going to play 40 minutes a game. I love Harkless, but wouldn't want him running the offense for even 10 minutes a game unless he dramatically improves his handles and decision making.

damn we agree....:woot

lol

mu guys I know think he's their best guard, but doesn't distribute the ball well, gets called for a good amount of charges...just their casual talk..from last sat game. Couldn't understand why he wasn't playing much...guess we know now.

I'd like to have Pinson. He does have a little Reaves in him, but not as good as Austin. I thought he got hurt during the game against us.... at least it looked like he was injured.....but I could be wrong. He isn't the shooter that I would like, but he can get to the rim. But if he is a headcase, then forget it.

I think it is wrong for players to jump from the place which gave them a chance. If he transfers I’d love to have him which was my original comment.

i am torn on this i really like the grad transfer rule ..

if a student athlete does what they should they can go to a new place ..

i am not a big fan of being able to transfer and play right away ..

None of those things are an apples to apples comparison of allowing freedom of movement in AMATEUR athletics.

Why not just let players change teams during games? Freedom, amirite?

It is my understanding that scholarships are 1 year contracts. And, on top of that, they have to be admitted to the school, in classes, be making acceptable grades, etc.

So the scenario you mentioned isn't applicable.

As long as you don't get into major trouble, no respectable coach is pulling a scholarship from kids year to year. It would be impossible to recruit after that.

Now coaches do tell players that he doesn't see playing time for him next year, which is encouraging the player to transfer.

And if you are good to your players, run a good program, are honest with them, etc they are less likely to transfer.

But if a player finds himself being recruited over, or not having the role on the team he wanted, or has some kind of conflict, or realized he wants to live somewhere else, etc I have no problem with them transferring.

I still think it will benefit OU more than it hurts. Gives other schools a chance to nab good players who aren't fitting in or happy with their current situation for whatever reason.

OU basketball is proof that that isn't true. Lon is as nice as they come, and we've had a LOT of transfers out (and in) over the last several years.

I'm just not a fan of it. The players are AMATEUR athletes that are supposed to be getting a college education on top of playing college sports (I know, the education has become almost completely unimportant to some). The coaches, this is their career. I'm just not sure how you could hold them to the same standard given that difference.

Am I for giving some players a break when there is a coaching change or some major event at a school? Probably. But transferring b/c you got better and now better schools want you? I'm just not a fan.

Not true at all. LK is the definition of that & players transfer. If you are honest with them the players who realize they might not get significant playing time are likely to transfer. Also if you run a good program you filter out the bad apples even if they can play (Booker, McGusty, etc.).

You might be right, but I still doubt he pulls their scholarship unless they aren't working hard, class attendance, etc. I doubt he's pulling scholarships just because they didn't pan out, but I'm sure he's telling them they'd have a better chance to play if they transferred.

This isn’t true. Players want to play and today’s players aren’t willing to wait 2 years before they get their shot, regardless of how well they’re treated or how good the program is.

Players are individuals thus their individual needs do not necessarily correlate/jive with their fellow teammates. What is good for one is not good for others as different paths are chosen and for differing reasons.

The scholarships are now 4 year contracts. It doesn’t mean you can’t violate the contract and lose your scholarship. If a coach wants you gone they will make it miserable enough for you to want to leave.
I’m in favor of the grad transfer rule.
As far as open transfer the blue bloods will lose depth but gain starters. The OU football team is a perfect example this year. We lost several players to the portal most of which weren’t going to be more than backups and special team players. We probably gained 4 starters next year coming in though.

Should Brady transfer, come back, or try his luck with the nba? Not sure if he can play in the nba, if he comes back for another year of college I think he may transfer to another team to avoid being put in same position as this year

Brady's forte is open looks from the perimeter. He also stands 6'9" Is there really a demand for a player of his stature and prowess in the NBA? He's not quick enough to defend the interior and no NBA coach will put him up against guards as well.

Zero chance the NBA is interested.

Agreed. I do know that he recruits over guys and tells them they can gray shirt or go somewhere else every year.

For some... some players get conned in the recruiting process. Promised spots, playing time, etc...

Waiting 2 years when you only have 4 is a pretty big deal... I would transfer immediately.

Seems like the younger generation is less inclined to make certain sacrifices and they want immediate playing time. The number of players on a squad dictate who plays for there are generally not enough positions available in the lineup for all to play immediately. Might be wrong, but we have 13 players on scholarship thus the raw numbers command that everyone is not seeing the court. If squads were limited to 8 or 9 then that could easily change, but that's not going to happen.
