Transfers

AAU basketball rubbing off on the women's game. Sad as that wasn't the case not too long ago.

Anyone else note they say Recee' Caldwell goes to San Antonio's "Larry Bird Johnson" High School?

I can't find any reference to that high school. I do get some images of Larry Bird with a Larry Bird High School caption that may be his high school. But, I find nothing in Texas. There is a Lady Bird Johnson High School in San Antonio.

Actually, unlike the men's game--women realize they only have 4 yrs of basketball in their career (in most cases), so if things don't go well their first year there is a huge urgency to move on with only 3 yrs left. College coaches promise the world to these kids and then it doesn't pan out. In most cases their scholarships are year to year not 4 years to the surprise of many people. If college coaches would do their homework better and pick the right kid for their program they wouldn't have as many transfers. Too many get caught up the the recruiting war of getting the highest ranked player instead of the one that fits their style of play or system. Of course it's not a perfect science, but many don't spend enough time getting to know the player or think they can change the player to fit their system. AAU ball has really changed--coaches change teams from year to year and don't have much loyalty to players so it's tough for players to stay on the same team. Now players and parents have to evaluate each year where to go, especially when you live in a big state or city. Oklahoma isn't as bad but it's is changing year to year more often than before.

Well, I should have been more specific...Recee' DOES go to Lady Bird Johnson HS in San Antonio, but whoever did the "typing" for the webpage obviously either had auto-correct deployed or his/her fingers just automatically typed "Larry Bird" instead of "Lady Bird" and either didn't proofread or is so basketball-attuned that nothing even seemed slightly amiss. It just made me laugh, that's all.

I think a reason for transfers of elite players might be there is more awareness of overseas pro ball and then, of course, the WNBA. If they think they would do better at another school, then they would want that opportunity to prove themselves.

Another thing is women's basketball gets more coverage than it used to. Young women get more coverage and they want to be recognized for their play.

As far as the coaches recruitment efforts and attitudes towards it, I would guess there is some validity in that argument. Again as the women's game gains prominence, there is more pressure to succeed and I imagine a lot more demand on the coaches' time.
