OU basketball: Defense propels Sooners to win

Interesting comments from Coach Beard about Rashard Odomes ...

(EXCERPT) “They're an opportunistic defense,” Texas Tech coach Chris Beard said. “You think you're doing OK, Lattin will block a shot; you think you're doing OK, Trae will get a steal; you think you're doing OK, one of those players will take a charge.

“Kind of like in football, you've got a defense maybe giving up yards but you're getting turnovers and stuff. Kind of felt that way about Oklahoma tonight.”

Then there was Odomes, pestering Evans and others on the perimeter regularly.

Evans, the reigning Big 12 player of the week, was just 7 of 17 from the floor and 1 for 5 from behind the 3-point line.

Leading up to the game, Beard found himself showing film of Odomes to his players, not for scouting purposes but to teach them how to play on the defensive end.

This from a coach whose team entered the game No. 3 nationally in defensive efficiency.

“He's one of the best players in the Big 12 that doesn't get talked about,” Beard said. “Gave us all we could handle last year, plays multiple positions, plays hard too.

“I actually took a couple of the clips from his personnel tape this week and showed some of our younger guys, ‘This is how you play the game.'”

High praise from a defense-minded coach.

I love RO's game. It's easy for people to notice the one glaring weakness (his shot), but Beard is absolutely right -- he plays very good defense and always competes. In the TCU and OSU games, our defense suffered noticeably as soon as he got in early foul trouble and had to leave the game.

Always room for a lock down defender.

His offense is a plus.

Also his inability to go to his right. Or his propensity to go to his left how ever you prefer it said.

Love RO, think he has great potential. Now, if he could only make a layup and hit a few freethrows.

He is OU's version of Andre Robertson. Play D, cut to the basket, making layups on drives and finish on the break - all while locking down someone on D. That's a valuable commodity - look at the Thunder's defense with him out of the lineup.

Go Ro!

Our team is much better defensively with Odomes on the floor.

That dreaded 2nd foul in the first half has haunted Odomes the last few games .(Most of them silly too) If we can keep him in the game longer ,he will shut teams down even more .
He is becoming a lock down guard ,he has that passion

Great praise from an impressive coach. Everyone who keeps saying the starting 5 shouldn't involve Odomes should read this.
