The Sunday Oklahoman today had their Super 5 team. Three of the 5 were from the Tulsa metro area. Their 6A all state team was Tulsa area players. There have been many division 1 players from northeast Oklahoma. Has Coale ever signed a large school player from the Tulsa area? If not, does anyone know why?

Jenks' Jessica Washington gets dream opportunity of signing with North Carolina
SUPER 5 GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM
— Jenks' Jessica Washington grew up wanting to play for the Tar Heels. Washington averaged 23.8 points and 7.7 rebounds this season.

When he started realizing how good his daughter could be at basketball, Travis Washington started to push.
Young Jessica Washington didn't want much to do with that initially.

“I started thinking when she was around fifth or sixth grade that she had a special talent,” Travis said. “But it took her a bit to want to work to take advantage of that.”
It didn't take long, though.
Now, about six years later, Washington is one of the best girls players in the country.
She played for Team USA in the FIBA U17 world championships in The Netherlands last summer, was the state's lone McDonald's All-American and signed to play at North Carolina.
Now, she's an Oklahoman Super 5 honoree.
“I feel very blessed to have the opportunities I've had,” Jessica said.
Washington grew up wanting to play for the Tar Heels. Travis was born in Charlotte and still has family near the school. His daughter grew up with UNC posters on her walls and Tar Heels jerseys in her closet.
“It was my dream school,” Washington said. “It's amazing to think about getting that chance. It's like a dream come true.”

She's worked plenty hard to earn those opportunities, though.
“People don't realize how hard she works,” Jenks coach Mandy Nightengale told the Tulsa World recently. “It's one of the most surprising things about her. I guarantee you that the day after our season was over, she was back in the gym working on her game.”
Washington's senior season wasn't easy.
The Trojans were in a rebuilding year after losing a big chunk of their lineup from last season's state tournament team and Nightengale was in her first year as Jenks' coach.
Jenks finished 15-11 and missed the state tournament.
“Of course I would've been a lot happier with winning a state championship but all around, it was a good season. I kept getting better.”
Washington averaged 23.8 points and 7.7 rebounds despite drawing a variety of defenses designed to keep her in check.
“I did a lot this year but one of the biggest things was working on my leadership on the court,” she said. “I've tried to make sure I'm staying positive and bringing positive vibes to the rest of the team.”

There have been many, many others in the area that have gone on to Division 1 programs since Coale became the OU coach. I wonder why she has not been able to sign ant large school players from the area in 17 years?

I can only think of a few that were really what you might call difference makers in college.

Isis Tillis - She went to Cascia Hall and chose Duke. We've often discussed on this board how hard it is to recruit players to a public university if they set their sites on schools like Duke or Stanford. At one time, someone posted that Cascia Hall and Holland Hall don't even keep information about OU and OSU in their counselor's offices.

The girl (her name escapes me) who just finished her career at UCLA and started at Tennessee. Tennessee was her 'dream school' from what I understand.

The Mayberry girl at Tulsa. From what I read, she decided at a very young age she wanted to stay home and play for Tulsa.

Ty mentioned the Washington girl whose 'dream school' was UNC.

I'm sure there were other D1 recruits but these are the ones that come to mind.

From a recruiting standpoint, I would think a coach could approach a girl who is considering Duke, UCONN, Tenn, etc and say, "if you come to OU, you can take us to the next level and be the star of the team getting high praise from our students and fans whereas, if you go to some programs that don't need you as much as we do, you will be one of several really good players."
One would think most girls who play at high levels would not want to go to UCONN and sit on their butts behind Lewis or Stewart.

I'm not going to say many would listen but I think some would. We see North Carolina loading up on players everyone wanted. They had to be telling those girls something they wanted to hear. We see other great players choosing other lower ranked programs. There must be things they see or hear about those schools causing them to want to play there. In most cases I would think OU has as much or more to offer as those other teams.

I'm pretty sure we actively recruited the girls I mentioned.

It seems to me that most recruits fall into one of two categories.

1) They have one particular school they really want to go to.
2) They have a completely open mind.

We're going to more than our fair share if we are their 'dream school' or if they have a completely open mind. But, if they consider someplace else their dream school and they get an offer from them, we don't stand much of a chance.

And some kids just want to get out of state, see some part of the country they've never seen before. I can completely understand an 18 year old wanting to spread their wings far from home.

I would think that the vast majority of those girls never get offers from their "dream schools". I'm sure a lot of girls every year would LOVE to have an offer from UCONN but never hear from them. We know a girl in Texas who would love to come to OU (her Dad posts here) but so far, OU has not offered.

My point is, the elite girls are being recruited by UCONN, Tenn, Notre Dame, Duke, etc. If we want to reach the level of those programs, we have go convince a few of those same recruits that they would be better off at OU. Lately, we've had a hard time doing that but with the openings now at OU, this should be our year to land some great players.

Mac mentioned we need a point guard. You bet we do. Some think that Maddie, Carter, or perhaps Edwards are the future point guards at OU and we're fine there. I hope that's true but not sure at this point. He mentioned Ortiz and I would love to have her. I'm concerned that Sherri doesn't think she has a shot at Ortiz since she has taken Edwards.

Here is the current situation:

Seniors- 4
Griffin- C
Ellenberg- SG
Durrett- PF
Hook- PG

Juniors- 1
Campbell- SF

Sophomores- 3
Williams- PF/C
Kornet- SF

Freshmen- 4
Wyatt- G
Kellogg- PF
Edwards- PG
Carter- G
Manning- not a clue so I'll say guard

Commitments
Williams (class of 2014)
Dungee (class of 2016)

We have 12 on ships going into fall. After this year we lose 4 seniors dropping our roster to 8. With the 1 commitment for 2014, that raises us to 9; therefore, we have 6 ships available.

After reviewing the current situation, I'm going to retract what I said earlier, we do have room for a great point guard, another guard like Dunbar, who at 6'2", could also likely play PF in Sherri's offense, as well as 2 or 3 bigs.

Tulsa resident badger here. If we want Tulsa-area recruits to go to OU, why can't we take a page outta the football/baseball playbook and play in Tulsa?

There are two (NCAA tournament-bound!) teams in Tulsa we can play. OSU is an hour away if either of our athletic departments dare give up a home game for a neutral site game (idea: Tulsa's BOK Center for one, OKC's Chesapeake Arena for the other???). Hell, make the men's and women's games a double-header and both locations and you'll have one hell of a hot ticket here in T-town! It is already impossible to get OU-OSU baseball tickets here unless you want your butt sitting on a grassy outfield area.

If we do this, I will attend. If we do this Halloween weekend, I will get my husband and I to dress as Skeletor and a scared ref. I even have the short blond hair now to pull it off.

The talent level in Oklahoma just I'snt that great... Sherri has done the best she has with what shes had to pick from here in Oklahoma.

think about this there has only been 5 players from the state that have been in the Micky dee gane and not one of them went on to be that great in college Washington is the 5th and we will have to wait and see what happens.

Playing Tulsa makes sense to me. With Mossman and Brown at Tulsa, there is a connection. If there happened to be a good player(s) in the Tulsa area at the time, it would be nice to invite her/them as our guest to the game.

I wish we would play ORU and TU each year. Play one away and one at home. You would have a presence in T-Town each year. Thet used to play the Bertha Teague Classic each year with OU, Osux, ORU, and TU in it. I think Finkbeiner at ORU was the fly in the ointment that got that cancelled. He is gone now. Maybe something couyld be worked out.

I loved the Bertha Teague Classic. I heard that OSU was the fly in the ointment, but that was before Goodenough was there. I would love to see it started back up again, too.

Not that it changes the number of scholarships available, just a slight alteration to how long one of them will be "taken up," but I'm pretty sure Manning will be a Redshirt Freshman next season.

I'm sure you're right. I will edit that.

I like having players like Sharane and Maddie who are capable of playing multiple positions.

This is the part of that list that intrigues me. It consists of what is rather than what we might want it to be. Let's add heights:

Williams 6-3
Kellogg 6-2
Manning 6-2
Kornet 6-1
Campbell 5-9 or 5-10
Wyatt 5-9 to 5-10
Carter 5-9?
Williams 5-7?
Dungee 5-10?
Edwards 5-5 to 5-7?

Three of these tend to be posts or forwards. Campbell, Wyatt, Dungee, and Carter tend to be small forward, shooting guard types. Edwards is probably only a point. I think we might see Maddie at anything from point guard to center in the same game, although she was recruited as a point guard. I think AFan4Hand said she pretty much destroyed Washington in an AAU game.

Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if Sherri triend to recruit no more than one power forward/post type in the next two years. I wonder if we aren't looking at a trend to interchangeable parts.

I think Sherri will sign some bigs. If not, it will be a huge disappointment.

Back to the original question of this thread, I guess Coale has not signed a girl from the large schools in the Tulsa metro area in 17 years. Beinf one of the two large metro areas in Oklahoma, does this not seem strange to anyone else?

Has the men's program signed a player from one of the large schools in Tulsa since Waymon?
