Memphis coach Josh Pastner held court during his 25-minute press conference at the BOK Center this afternoon.
The affable 33-year-old coach singled out Arizona media by name (he was a longtime assistant at the University of Arizona), heaped praise on his upcoming opponent and addressed rumors about his name surfacing about the head coaching vacancy at the University of Oklahoma.
The No. 12 Tigers (25-9) will play No. 5 Arizona (27-7) at approximately 1:45 p.m. Friday at the BOK Center.
Pastner on:
Memphis’ playing in Tulsa, in terms of proximity for fans: “We were fortunate to have this draw, obviously, to be in Tulsa. It’s a six-hour car drive for us for the fan base in Memphis ... I would say there’s no difference between our fan base and the Green Bay Packers in the fan base. They are heavily invested and connected to their program. This is not my program because Memphis was good before I was good.”
Arizona star Derrick Williams: “I thought Derrick was going to be very good, but not to this level. And that’s a credit to (Wildcats coach) Sean Miller for the job he’s done in developing him. The guy can score all over the place, he can shoot the 3. You look at his numbers, he can score in the paint. He can pass. He’s a lottery pick.”
The Oklahoma opening: “I have not been contacted by anybody. And again my focus is Memphis. ... it’s not about me. Memphis basketball was good before I was born. It’s going to be great when I leave this beautiful earth. So I hope to be here for a long time. That’s my goal. I love being a part of Memphis. I love our fans and our team. I also recognize that I’m not bigger than the program. Nobody is bigger than the program. That keeps me humble and I don’t get involved in the other stuff.”
