Many have suggested here that we played poorly on Saturday, but there are a couple of stats that are worth noting.

West Virginia was, as many of you know, the top offensive rebounding team in the country, but on Saturday, they scored just seven second-chance points. Say what you will, that's impressive.

And the announcers went on and on during the game about our turnovers. Their relentless harping on it suggested strongly to me this was a theme they'd agreed upon in advance, because, surprise, we had only two more turnovers than WVU did. But if they said a single, solitary word about WVU's 16 turnovers during the game, I missed it.

No doubt, we handled the WVU pressure much better than most! More than held our own on the boards. We just didn't shoot it very well. Some of it was the half-court mugging by WVU that was only selectively enforced.

WVU played physical, and it got us out of rhythm. If we hit open shots like we normally do, it's a 15 point win.

This whole idea of Huggy's "foul on every play, they can't call all of them" philosophy is irritating. The officials need to stand up to that nonsense and stop letting themselves be cowed. No team gets all of its fouls called, of course -- some will always be missed -- but if the officials were instructed by the conference to blow the whistle every time WVU was deserving of one, no matter how quickly the fouls started to add up, WVU would change its ways very quickly. If the officials had called every foul they could have on Saturday, with the way OU was hitting its free throws, the game would have been a laugher.

That's just it though, it's tough to hit those open shots when you are fighting tooth and nail just to get the ball up the court.

And less turn overs than their average opponent and substantially lower turn over advantage for WVU.

I can think of a couple or more that OU could have avoided. I think next time OU plays WVU they will keep it below 15.

I don't think we played poorly at all. I don't think we shot the ball well but that doesn't mean we played poorly. I think it's great that we were able to win over a very good team even when we don't shoot the ball well. We can't be the team that can only win if we're making 45%+ from the 3 pt. line.

The problem is the next time will be in Morgantown. The refs will likely swallow their whistles and allow WVU to play an even more rough and tumble game in front of their home fans. If true, this could lead to even more OU turnovers.

Missouri used to play that physical/mugging style of ball under Norm Stewart....hated it then, hate it now.

That's virtually a given. Just ask KU.

Any team in the Big 12 that gets out of Morgantown with a win will earn it. The Mountaineers are good and they're physical. It's hard to come out of that place with a win, even when they're not. The odds are definitely not in the visiting team's favor this year.

I think we pushed it too fast the first few minutes but then settled into passing over the pressure. I was pleased with our press break and us having two more turnovers than them is impressive. I think they are a really, really good team. They probably win this conference if we don't.

I felt like WVU's front-court D had much to do with our shooting. When we broke the press (almost always) and didn't get an easy shot then it was like we were being pressed in the front-court all over again and we were not used to it. We seemed to be looking for relief once we crossed the half court but it did not come. I suspect we had far more turnovers in the front-court. Granted they also fouled us an awful lot.

I felt like we were much better off in a running game so we could stay aggressive. Trying to play keep away from them is not easy, especially when fouls are not called. Spacing and offensive aggression is the best way to fight it. No doubt that FT shooting was a big key.

I didn't feel like we played too bad overall. We just got hit from something we are not used to, even though we knew it was coming. There are several areas that need improvement before March. However, what I like most about this team is that they stay tough. They might (and often do) give up some leads but they find a spark again. They don't give up when they are behind.

The NCAA addresses it seemingly every off-season. We are promised that the officials will call the game consistently. And yet it never lasts past December. Once conference season starts its back to rugby. Unless both sides play basketball (like OU and ISU will).

The traveling call on Buddy late was an indication of how much WVU gets away with. Two WVU players bumped and bumped Buddy until he just couldn't take it anymore. Combine that with their propensity to apparently always stay vertical when we went to the basket after breaking the press set us up for a close, poor shooting game.

And the announcers had the audacity to say the defenders were moving their feet so it wasn't a foul. They bumped him numerous times on that play and pretty much pushed him to travel.

I actually didn't have a problem with that play. They didn't reach. To me that is the key. Buddy had a chance to make a pass, it's almost as if he was fishing for the foul call that never came.

A lot of people would say OU played that style under Sampson. I sure didn't hate it back then.

There are different ways to win and play the game. I hate when the try to make basketball played just one way. That is boring. Boring, and benefits the blue bloods. Give the little guys a chance.

If Sampson had extended his to full court then we would have scored a lot more points! :hollis754:
