Thoughts

To each his own, but I am really pleased overall with the direction of the program.

First, he did a decent job putting a staff and team together from essentially nothing last year. New system, new players, and we still had a winning team.

While there was plenty to complain about last year, it is unquestionable that we improved, and the kids generally improved, through the year and we were playing our best ball in the B12 tourney.

Then he rebuilds his staff, signs three sought after kids in the portal and, to my eyes, the best freshman class in many years. And we haven't even seen the Northweather kid yet.

Basketball is different than football, night to night there will be a different team show up. I have been watching and going to games at OU since before the Lloyd Noble center was built and this has been true of every coach we have had. I guess what I am saying is that I anticipate Moser will have this team improve through the year -- just like last year. Who knows, but to my eye we look vastly more talented than last year. But, we will see.

The Cole kid we just signed is a good highly sought after kid, and at least from a recruiting standpoint, a higher ranked kid than many we have signed in the last 20 years.

If he can get the kids to buy in and get those with eligibility to return next year, then I would think we could make a real step forward.

All in all, I am pleased with the direction of the team. Hopefully the fans will give it to the end of the year and see how the team looks at that time to determine "direction". if we can end up with a little better record and go to the NCAA, then I will be satisfied. I can appreciate that some have higher expectations. But, we live in a different and new world in college athletics with free transfers and NIL. Navigating these and all of the normal issues is new ground for everyone.

How can we be "vastly more talented" and Jacob Groves is starting and Bijan Cortes is playing significant minutes? I honestly don't know what you're seeing.

Sherfield and Bamisile look more talented than Goldwire and Harkless to me. The 3 freshman all look more talented than last year's freshman class. They are certainly more highly rated and taller. Godwin is a better player in my eyes than ethan, Mawein and Issanza. Not sure about YaYa or the Northweather kid, but both may also be better. To be seen. Tanner, Jacob, and Noland all look more fit and stronger than last year. The above is why I think we look more athletic to me.

Cowboy 's words were stronger than I am feeling, but I do agree there are some reasons for hope.

I don't think Hill will miss multiple point blank shots every night. I expect Oweh and especially Bam to look more under control as the season progresses. We saw enough of Noland last year to know his average game will be better than Monday. I expect Moser to refine the offense to player skillets as we go. SHSU did guard us well, so give them credit, but it's also the first resistance this team has faced, so we have to give them a chance to learn from it...and hope they do!

I definitely expect our sub patterns to change!

As for vastly more talented, I'm not sure, but I thought J Groves looked noticeably improved either being under control and his footwork. I don't see him as the problem.

Finally, Cortes played 7 minutes total, less than any other player who got in the game. I'm not saying he looked great, but he's a poor example of our average talent level over 40 minutes.

If you couldn’t see that Jacob Groves is vastly improved, I don’t know what to say. While it’s true that Bijan Cortes didn’t play well, as a player who was just returning from an injury he gets a pass from me.

That said, the new players on this team are largely responsible for the vast improvement! IMO, Porter didn’t take advantage of the team’s talent by staying with two returning starters from last year way too long when they were having a bad game. Hopefully, he’ll learn from the mistakes he made!

Jacob Groves may be vastly improved but he still shouldn't be starting on a Big 12 team. Come on now. He will get eaten alive when we get into our conference schedule.

They were playing against inferior competition (maybe) and these guys are all experienced. They should have been ready to play. I don't see that we are "vastly improved" in any way. Maybe the new guys are a big improvement. If so, they need to be in the lineup.

We just got beat by Sam Houston State and people are in here arguing that we are vastly more talented. It's kind of funny.

I agree to an extent with your point, but I also think that it’s possible to be more talented yet still not an improved team. I think that’s where some of the questions/concerns about Moser come into play. If Monday’s performance happens with any regularity this season, I think the team will clearly be underperforming its talent level. We aren’t an elite team, but we shouldn’t look that bad against that kind of opponent.

Sure we may be improved and we may be more talented, But "vastly more talented?" Nope. If the new players made us "vastly more talented" they would have played more and probably started unless the coach is completely incompetent. Well, maybe he is. We'll see.

it's one game.
I'm as embarrassed by the performance as anyone but some of yall are making some ridiculous claims after one game. Especially a game that we were in control of for all but the last few minutes.

These kind of results are not uncommon early in the non conference.

Upsets happen--early in the season, especially. And in finding funny the fact that people are saying we're more talented, you've decided we're not based on a single game--the first of the season for a squad with a number of new players. That's funny to me.

I'm as upset about the loss as anyone, and from where I sit, we darn sure better see significant improvement on Friday.

One SHU (they don't use State in their name anymore) player got super hot. He's not even one of their top players (he hardly played in the first half). So the loss was something of a fluke. He may not have another game like that all season.

That said, our offense was terrible and it should never have happened, but it really did come down to a single guy playing way over his head for 10 minutes.

I sincerely hope that's the worst game we play all season. I'm still in wait-and-see mode with Moser, as I have been since he was announced as our new coach. Unlike cowboysooner, I'm not impressed by his ability to hire good assistants, since they keep leaving before they've even been here a year. I will say this, I want Moser on a short leash. I don't want us to suffer through three or four years of missing the tourney while he finds his footing. If we don't see significant improvement this year over last season, I will have seen all I need to see.

Well we never got more than 14 points ahead so I wouldn't say we were ever blowing them out. But you're right, it's one game. We will see how "vastly more talented" we are when we play a few more.

It wasn't all bad. We had a 98% chance of winning according to ESPN with 4 minutes left int he game. We were up by 12 at that point. It fell apart at the end

I just figured we'd have a bit more 'grit' considering how many close games we lost last season. Despite what we lost, we did actually have quite a bit of experience returning too. We've got to find a way to grind out these close games, unlike last season. That was the difference in being an NCAA tourney team and NIT team, just a couple close losses. Hopefully we'll figure it out at some point.

I think our team the last so many years have developed the opposite of grit. Like a snatching defeat from the jaws of victory persona. Idk. I really am subscribing to the addition by subtract theory for the football team, i wonder if we could have some of that on the bball team too..

Who would you get rid of?

I’m hearing he’s a control freak. He has one guy on staff he bounces things off of who is basically a yes man.

I so badly want to say I'm not in panic mode esp after only 1 season + 1 loss, but until we notch multiple wins, I'm panicking..

Our recruiting looks good tho largely, on the bright side

Its 1 game, but I'm with steven here

None right now. Just saying some of these guys remind me of the Steven Pledger/andrew fitzgerald era and i think we can overrecruit some guys hopefully.

We really need oweh and uzan to be solid.
