Current record: 8-3
(6-1 at home)
NET ranking: 40

Key wins: Utah (NET 136), Georgia Tech (NET 100), DePaul (NET 81)
Key losses: lost by 2 points to both Michigan (NET 2) and Indiana (NET 20), lost by 19 to Fresno State on a neutral court

I went to Northwestern for undergrad and I follow them closely. They were bad last year, which was a big anomaly coming off their first NCAA tournament berth in 2017. Their stadium was being renovated, so they played all of their home games in All-State Arena, which is in a western suburb of Chicago (Evanston is a northern suburb of Chicago). It's about a 45 minute drive from campus to their alternate arena in light traffic. There was no student representation and really no atmosphere at all, except for the opponent's fans. Head coach Chris Collins admitted that this cost them "5 or 6 games" and it also cost them a lot of confidence.

The stadium renovation has been completed, so this will be a home game for NU. The stadium is VERY nice while still feeling intimate. The students won't be there (they normally are packed behind each basket), so it's unclear how strong the home court advantage will be. Northwestern is similar in quality to Creighton (slightly worse offensively, but better defensively)

Northwestern primarily relies on their senior leaders 1-2 punch:
Dererk Pardon, 6'8" C - 13.9 ppg, 8.8 rpg
Vic Law, 6'7" F - 18.4 ppg, 6.5 rpg

Both OU and Northwestern have been prone to slow starts this season and then they usually go on 2nd half runs. NU was down big to DePaul before going on a 25-0 (!) run. I'm expecting a low scoring 1st half, both teams to settle in and exchange runs in the 2nd half, with the Sooners pulling off a close win.

I am very excited for this game and will be attending with 42 Sooners! We will be representing loudly!

Well done, Mont! Have your group do something crazy so we can find you in the crowd.

Vic Law is a good player. He was hurt when they came to town last year and didn't play. Had a realy good year 2 years ago when Northwestern went to the dance.

Yeah, he and Pardon are both good players. Pardon doesn't stretch the floor like a lot of modern bigs do, but he is good around the basket and a good offensive rebounder. Those two definitely will be at the top of the scouting report.

THE OPENING TIP: Northwestern and Oklahoma met for the first time ever last season. The Sooners came away with a 104-78 win over the Wildcats.
• Vic Law missed the 2017 matchup due to injury.
• Five Northwestern players scored in double figures.
• Dererk Pardon led NU with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go along with nine rebounds.
• Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chris Collins, who was Illinois’ Mr. Basketball in 1992 (Glenbrook North HS) was recruited by Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger in high school, who was then the head coach at Florida. Collins' Duke team beat Kruger's Gators in the 1994 Final Four.

DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE: The Wildcats are holding teams to just 61.0 points per game, which ranks 15th nationally and third in the Big Ten. The 61.0 points per game allowed through 11 games is the second-best scoring defense average through 11 games during the Collins’ era.

Northwestern is holding teams to just 28.5 percent shooting from behind the arc. The Wildcats have not allowed more than five 3-pointers in a contest in their last six games.

Northwestern has held its last five opponents below their season scoring average.

FRIDAY'S GAME BASICS
Oklahoma (10-1, 0-0 Big 12) closes out its non-conference slate when it travels to Evanston, Ill., to face Northwestern (8-3, 0-2 Big Ten). The matchup along the shores of Lake Michigan will be Oklahoma’s first game in the Chicago area since facing DePaul in 1947. The Sooners are 2-0 in true road games this season after opening the season with wins over UTRGV and UTSA, but will look to snap a nine-game road losing streak against major-conference teams. Oklahoma will look to its defense to buckle down in the road environment. The Sooners are holding opponents to 37.0 percent shooting from the field, the second-best defensive field goal rate in the Big 12 and seventh best nationally.

2 point underdog on the road today... I like it!

2 point underdog on the road today... I like it!

I find it hard to believe we are an underdog....still not much respect from Vegas. According to the advanced metrics, we are better than Northwestern in virtually every phase of the game. Below are N'Western's advanced stats:
http://barttorvik.com/team.php?team=Northwestern

The shooting stats for both offenses are relatively close on 2-pt shots, but we shoot the 3 much better than they do. Both teams defend very well, but we have a slight advantage because N'Western doesn't defend the 2 nearly as well as they defend the 3. So I expect us to get to the basket....the million dollar question is will we finish and/or get fouled?

As for our defense, we above average at defending the 3 and Northwestern doesn't shoot a high % from 3 anyway. And we are top 10 in the country in 2 pt FG% defense. If we play at a high level on defense....they will have a hard time scoring on us unless........turnovers.

Their defense tends to turn teams over at an effective rate.....and this is an area where we've struggled obviously.

They also shoot a better % from the FT line than we do, so we need to limit our fouls when we can.

I expect a low scoring slugfest with not a lot of big runs in the game.....something like 66-61 OU.

I noticed their starting line-up includes Ryan Taylor (grad transfer). Wasn't he highly coveted last season as a transfer? Can't remember where he played...maybe Butler?

Looks like a very solid starting line-up with size. I wonder if Lon will stick with the most recent SL, or inject Doolittle back in for match up reasons. I think leaving the same is fine..since James has good size and has rebounded really well.

Ryan Taylor transferred from Evansville:

2017-18 (Evansville): First-team All-MVC ... Leading scorer in the MVC with 21.3 points per game … also led the league hitting 86.4% of his free throws … completed the season 4th in the Valley with 2.7 3-pointers per game and 5th in outside shooting, finishing at 42.4% ... second in the league with 35.7 minutes per game…was a 2-time MVC Player of the Week … named to the All-2MVC First Team … scored 10+ points in 24 out of 25 games …

Anyone have a quick way to watch? Not cutting the cords tonight!
