UT-Arlington beat Memphis last night

The also beat Ohio State in Columbus earlier. That UTA is a scrappy bunch..

What a start by UTA. I remember they gave us everything we wanted a couple of seasons ago in Arlington.

And in Norman the next year. Reger Dowell went off for like 30.

looks like a case of bad shooting by memphis

Memphis has been a poor shooting team the entire season. They're averaging 38% from the field (just over 21% from three).

That's why I thought OU should have gone to a zone and forced them to beat us from the outside. We gave up way too many layups and shots in close by failing to stop their dribble penetration in that game. A zone may not work with some of the teams we'll play, but I think that was definitely the thing to do against Memphis.

Our Memphis win wouldn't even have been close if we had done our business on the defensive glass. Their outrageous amount of offensive rebounds kept them in the game. That's going to be the danger spot for us. We are very weak in the post.

I couldn't agree more about OU's inability to keep Memphis off of the offensive glass. That's not the same team we saw last year, and I doubt if we'll see a repeat of that performance in future games.

I'm betting LK and his staff had a heart to heart meeting with the players the next day, followed by a practice session that focused on blocking out on rebounds. It won't matter much in tonight's game. But this team had better get back to the basics when the Badgers come to town on Sunday.

When a team shoots poorly there will be more offensive rebounds given up because there are more opportunities for rebounds. With that said, I agree that OU gave up too many rebounds.

It is interesting some suggested zone defense. Isn't the weakness of a zone giving up offensive rebounds?

most conventional thinking agrees with zones and rebounds, primarily because you are forcing outside shots, which, generally, create longer rebounds making it more difficult for your primary rebounders (4 and 5s) to rebound. It is also harder to "box out" as you are not guarding a man, but an area.

However, if you have guards dedicated to rebounding and work hard, you can rebound in a zone just fine.

LK does not seem to play a lot of zone - unless it has an element of a trap or pressure.

Yes...to a degree, rebounding can be a weakness against the zone. But as someone mentioned above me, the rebounds tend to be longer rebounds (because of the outside shots), so there are not as many "easy putbacks". Also, longer defensive rebounds off of a zone can create more opportunities to get out and push in transition.
